2.02. Mystical morning
Excerpt:
….
It’s between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m. The first sunshine appears over the mountains and between scattered clouds. There are small fires from leaves and light garbage. The air smells fragrant, and the white smoke rises almost vertically and hangs lazily in clouds in the tall tropical trees and the dense mangroves beside the river. A breeze shakes the foliage of the trees, and makes them shine golden in this special morning light. The sparkling, flickering and shimmering of the leaves together with the play of light and shadow of the smoke in the early sunshine, conjures up a mystical moment in the village.
The day awakens.
There are already a lot of activities on the beach. The fishing boat — it is about eight meters long and at its widest point it is about 1.5 meters wide — lies on the black sand beach. The fuselage is stabilized by two bamboo tubes as thick as legs. One of the poles is on the beach. The bamboo pole on the opposite side protrudes above the ocean water surface. It’s one of the bigger, better and more expensive fishing boat here. Powered by a 27 hp Honda engine. The boat has no superstructures. No cabin, roof or sails. A fishing net bulging with tamban (a type of sardine) takes up almost the entire space in the belly of the boat and piles up over the hull. A very productive catch early in the morning. On the boat, four strong fishing men stand side by side. Their faces and the naked upper bodies shine in the early sunlight golden. They unravel the net, shake it wild and hand it over to the four fishermen standing in the opposite on the beach. They pull the net to themselves. It is shaken and beaten. The fish flies in high arcs around and is collected by women, men and children.
The fishermen pick the hanging fish from the net. The catch is collected in rectangular boxes made of Styrofoam. With the permission of the skipper some children collect in the blood-soaked water around the boat the swimming torn Tamban in their plastic bags. Some children will sell their catch later in the village or the relatives prepare the breakfast from it.
A 12-year-old naked boy stands deep in the boat and tirelessly draws water from the hull with a coffee cup. The women crack funny and shoddy jokes. People laugh heartily and it is a lively atmosphere. In the meantime everyone involved is covered with body parts, the blood and the scales of the Tambanfish.
The styrofoam boxes fill up quickly. Before ice poles are added and the boxes are closed with the lids, the fish is weighed. The skipper, who is only called “boss” by everyone, keeps a detailed record and at the same time he monitors the work with an extremely satisfied expression. Drivers with rattling motorcycles are already waiting impatiently to stow the styrofoam boxes in brackets behind the driver’s seats. They bring the fish to the market in the city or in the mountains. Payment is immediate and cash on the beach, which is also the boss’s job.

2.03. Breakfast with Officer Sarang
Excerpt:
….
The door flies open and the sporty young student stands in the room. In his hand a large paper bag with fragrant baked goods. We drink the hot coffee and eat the soft rolls, fresh from the oven. The breakfast is good.
“What happens next?”
“Ma’am Papillio will talk to you. She is surely very excited about your story,” replies Officer Sarang. He frowned and said: “Important is what the children say and of course their parents. I hope the best for you. How do you feel now?”
“After the shower and the small breakfast much better. Listen, Sir Sarang, I have to inform my family and also my friends and the parents of the children. How long do I stay in arrest?”
“Ma’am Papillio and Ma’am Tolisan will speak to you later and answer all your questions,” Officer Sarang evades my questions. Nevertheless, he would like to know: “How long have you known the parents and their children?”
“The children since their birth and the parents a little longer.”
