2.09. The nightmare in the dungeon

Excerpt:

….
(Continuation of the chapter 2.03.)

Officer Sarang is in a good mood and sprints back to the police station, through the first gate of the wire fence before jumping sportily over the sewer. I almost broke my foot there this morning.

Now I’m sitting on the lower bunk bed and staring into the pile of garbage. Nothing moves or rustles in there. The watch shows seven o’clock. After the little sleep last night and the simple but delicious breakfast, I get tired quickly. Exhausted, I lie on my right side. My arm is my pillow. I don’t even remember the worse condition of the cardboard on the bed. Sleep falls over me like a black cloth. I register the slight throbbing under the band aid on the back of my left hand while I’m still half asleep. Then I’m sleeping finally.

-★-

The nightmare leaves me flying in a jumbo jet full of garbage. I am the only passenger. The destination is unclear, loneliness grabs me. After a short, restless flight, the entire crew said goodbye to me with a handshake on the aircraft door. Instead of the uniform of an airline, the entire team wears dark blue police uniforms and flip-flops. In addition to the uniform, the captain is adorned with an oversized police hat with a blood-red ribbon. He grins broadly, reveals disgusting teeth, and hands me a simple box. The thin cardboard is damp and has water and mold stains. It suddenly smells earthy, musty and of damp paper. The captain continues to grin oily and whispers in barely understandable English: “Sir, this is our present to you.” His grin dies and he orders: “Open the box!” In the box are highly polished and shiny chrome handcuffs. The crew laughs loudly. Some take photos and crack jokes, others shout: “Oh, my God — oh, my God!”

The stewardess is short and stout and her laminated ID dangles from under the big boobs. She makes a grimace and speaks German: “Our present to you. For your future!”

In a panic, I rush out of the plane, down the gangway, past all the control areas, across the airport.

A security officer rushes after me. He bears a striking resemblance to Officer Sarang: “Mister Heger, sir,” he calls out, “Mister, please stand still, please wait! There’s good news for you!”

“Mister Heger, Sir,” I hear from far away, “Mister Heger, sir, wake up, Ma’am Papillio wants to speak to you.” The bunch of keys jingles and the lattice door is already creaking. I find it difficult to decipher the watch, dazed and drowsy. After a few seconds it works. It’s almost eight o’clock.

I proudly present chapter

2.08. Shocked parents

Excerpt:

….
[A phone call is going on…]
The woman’s voice continues to speak unmoved at normal volume. She doesn’t say any word about Ernesto’s choleric behavior: “The children are fine and unharmed. That means, we don’t yet know whether something has happened to them. In my experience, yes, but that will soon become apparent. We ask ourselves — of course — how can it be that the children in a strange city and far from there hometown are picked up half-naked with a foreigner in a hotel? What kind of parents are you, because you allow that? That is what many here in my city are asking now — many!”

Ernesto struggles for words. The woman’s last sentences hit him like a wooden stick. The people around Michael and Ernesto are also silent. Apart from the sobbing of some women and a constant cough and throat clearing, it is oppressively quiet. Some are hugging each other. First of all, everyone has to digest and assign what has been said. There is a dangerous, nervous tension in the air. Little Max also feels that something is wrong and anxiously sucks on Ernesto’s pen.

Alvin, Ernesto’s eldest son, bursts into the brief silence. He sprints over the short bridge and waves his LG touchscreen cellphone wildly: “It’s Silvia! The children are in the BSWD in Tugalm. Silvia says we should watch TV. The news at eight o’clock!”

Ernesto grabs the LG cellphone, hands over the Nokia 3310 to Michael at the same time, turns to the side and speaks loudly to his daughter.

The loudspeaker is switched on, but Michael still has to press his phone to his ear to be able to make a call, as Ernesto is extremely loud. Michael screams into his phone: “Hello? Where is my son? I want to speak to him immediately!”

“He’s playing basketball with the other children in the yard. I advise you to come as soon as possible. But watch the ABC-PTV News at eight o’clock. You will find out everything important there.” The conversation ended without any warning. Michael stares at his Nokia in disbelief and shakes his head in confusion.

At the same time Ernesto ends his conversation with the words: “We’re coming, Silvia! We’re going straight to the BSWD!”

30 minutes until the eight o’clock news. But neither Michael, Ernesto, Matthew nor Romolo have a TV set. The people in front of the hut have already made their way. They walk in the direction of Papa Kandayo’s house, discuss the happening loudly and in a hurry. Papa Kandayo’s two daughters are well married in the United States. So Papa Kandayo can afford satellite TV and a flat screen TV. The biggest in the small village.

2.07. TV interview with obstacles

Excerpt:

….
Jan whispers to Phil: “They want to ask us something.”

“That’s called an interview!” reports Sam precociously.

The pretty lady has got out of the car and instructs the five boys now to sit on a concrete block. The man with the telescopic rod lets the microphone over Suzi and the children hover. On Suzis T-shirt, the children recognize the emblem of the TV station “ABC-PTV.” The five slides nervous, uncertain and full of respect on the concrete block back and forth.

“So you are the guys who like to stay at luxury hotels? My name is Suzette Zambrano. Call me like my friends, Suzi!” She smiles friendly, and gives off a bewitching perfume scent and turns the large sunglasses in her left hand.

The boys are captivated by Suzi’s aura and respond with a barely noticeable, rapid raising and lowering of the eyebrows.

“Okay, Suzi, we are ready,” calls the cameraman and lets the LED jump from red to green. The tape is also running.

Suzi is just about to start the first question when Dodung yells: “Ma’am, I want to be interviewed too. I know a lot of great stories from the street!”

The man with headphones and tape is annoyed: “Shut up, monkey!” And to Suzi he says: “Okay, Suzi. Three — two — one — go!”

Bernie roars suddenly: “Ha, Dodung, what do you want to tell us about? You only know stories from the gutter and which adhesive gives the biggest ecstasy.”

Dodong’s two companions laugh out loud. Dodung gives Bernie a hard headbutt, and Bernie shouts loudly: “Ouch!” But then he keeps laughing.

“Shit!” shouts the cameraman, “I can’t work like that.”

Ma’am Solano grabs Dodung by the ear and pulls him towards the house entrance. There Ma’am Burque suddenly appears and takes over the loudly lamenting troublemaker. Meanwhile the two other street boys dance, laughing out loud, singing and jumping around Dodung, Ma’am Solano and Ma’am Burque. Ma’am Solano shouts hysterically: “Quiet now! Shut up!”

2.05. The Media man

Excerpt:

….
Mr. Steiner stands in front of the building and looks up. At the facade flashes the advertisement of the TV station. It consists of colorful, thin neon tubes. Wherein the initial letters are larger than the following and enclosed with circular, colorful neon tube tires. Steiner reads from top to bottom:

A SIAN

B ROADCASTING

C OMPANY

P HILIPPINE

T ELE

V ISION

The neon tubes light up one after the other from top to bottom until the entire advertising lights up. At the end the rings around the initial letters flash three times. Then it remains dark for a brief moment and the sequence begins again.

He enters the building.

At 6:30 p.m. the conference for the morning-news “News Target Morning“ begins.

Steiner is satisfied with his team: “Good work yesterday.”

The reporter and the cameraman who were present at the police operation “Rescuing Filipino minors from a German in a hotel” grin proudly at each other, because there is really seldom praise from the boss.

Everyone calls Steiner “Boss.”

2.06. Bad game

Excerpt:

….
Five children, five stories, ponders Ma’am and ends the questioning in frustration.

Ma’am Solano does not hear what she would like to hear: There are no clear statements that could be interpreted as abuse and it seems Heger did not take photos of the children in the hotel naked. Nevertheless, she thinks she recognizes that the children sometimes behave very strangely during the tough questioning.

At the beginning of the interrogation, she made notes. But she quickly gave up, because it got too chaotic. Then there was a dispute about who-with-whom-showering. Disagreement then also on who-with-whom-romp. From then on, sensible questioning was no longer possible. The children always talked loudly and wildly at the same time.

Ma’am also has neither the sure instinct and sensitivity nor the patience and not the training and skills to hear the boy’s alleged secrets.

She is annoyed and postpones the phone call, under the pretext that she must first ask her boss Sir Sala for approval. Four of the boys have to go to the yard to play. The oldest of the children, that’s Sam, is supposed to stay.

Aboy, Phil, Jan and Dan protest loudly because they want to talk to their parents on the phone, but do what ma’am said. The respect for Ma’am is too great. Sad and frustrated they leave the office.

2.04. Shadows over the idyll

Excerpt:

….
A few huts down the street, the slightly overweight woman — her name is Lydia Barcella, but everyone just calls her “Lang” — holds a red Cherry Mobile cellphone in her hand and stares at it in disbelief. She is still covered with bits of fish. Now she begins to sob and cry, says briefly: “A text message from Jan,” and throws her husband Matthew around the neck. He grabs the cellphone and reads the SMS also. His first reaction is the same as his wife: staring.

“I don’t believe that!” he says, stunned, shaking his head wildly and looking around uncertainty.

People come and want to know what happened. Lang is now standing beside her husband, snatches the cellphone out of his hand and tries to get herself under control.

She screams hysterically: “Matthew, I go to Vicente. Run to Ernesto and Rica, they were still on the beach!”

Vicente and Michael Kabaltos are still standing in front of their hut.

“Lang!” cries Vicente, horrified, as Lang rushes over the jetty with arms waving and a bright red head and almost collides with Michael. Lang is completely out of breath from the short sprint. She shows her cellphone, stutters and gasps: “Children in the BSWD, Tommy arrested!”

Vicente doesn’t believe: “What, why? Is something happening?” Then the two mothers fall into their arms, sit down on the bench beside the front door and start crying.

Michael takes the cellphone from Lang’s cramped hand: “Lang, what happened? Did you call back?”

“No Load!” she sobs loudly.

2.02. Mystical morning

Excerpt:

….
It’s between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m. The first sunshine appears over the mountains and between scattered clouds. There are small fires from leaves and light garbage. The air smells fragrant, and the white smoke rises almost vertically and hangs lazily in clouds in the tall tropical trees and the dense mangroves beside the river. A breeze shakes the foliage of the trees, and makes them shine golden in this special morning light. The sparkling, flickering and shimmering of the leaves together with the play of light and shadow of the smoke in the early sunshine, conjures up a mystical moment in the village.

The day awakens.

There are already a lot of activities on the beach. The fishing boat — it is about eight meters long and at its widest point it is about 1.5 meters wide — lies on the black sand beach. The fuselage is stabilized by two bamboo tubes as thick as legs. One of the poles is on the beach. The bamboo pole on the opposite side protrudes above the ocean water surface. It’s one of the bigger, better and more expensive fishing boat here. Powered by a 27 hp Honda engine. The boat has no superstructures. No cabin, roof or sails. A fishing net bulging with tamban (a type of sardine) takes up almost the entire space in the belly of the boat and piles up over the hull. A very productive catch early in the morning. On the boat, four strong fishing men stand side by side. Their faces and the naked upper bodies shine in the early sunlight golden. They unravel the net, shake it wild and hand it over to the four fishermen standing in the opposite on the beach. They pull the net to themselves. It is shaken and beaten. The fish flies in high arcs around and is collected by women, men and children.

The fishermen pick the hanging fish from the net. The catch is collected in rectangular boxes made of Styrofoam. With the permission of the skipper some children collect in the blood-soaked water around the boat the swimming torn Tamban in their plastic bags. Some children will sell their catch later in the village or the relatives prepare the breakfast from it.

A 12-year-old naked boy stands deep in the boat and tirelessly draws water from the hull with a coffee cup. The women crack funny and shoddy jokes. People laugh heartily and it is a lively atmosphere. In the meantime everyone involved is covered with body parts, the blood and the scales of the Tambanfish.

The styrofoam boxes fill up quickly. Before ice poles are added and the boxes are closed with the lids, the fish is weighed. The skipper, who is only called “boss” by everyone, keeps a detailed record and at the same time he monitors the work with an extremely satisfied expression. Drivers with rattling motorcycles are already waiting impatiently to stow the styrofoam boxes in brackets behind the driver’s seats. They bring the fish to the market in the city or in the mountains. Payment is immediate and cash on the beach, which is also the boss’s job.

Excerpt:

The door flies open and the sporty young student stands in the room. In his hand a large paper bag with fragrant baked goods. We drink the hot coffee and eat the soft rolls, fresh from the oven. The breakfast is good.

“What happens next?”

“Ma’am Papillio will talk to you. She is surely very excited about your story,” replies Officer Sarang. He frowned and said: “Important is what the children say and of course their parents. I hope the best for you. How do you feel now?”

“After the shower and the small breakfast much better. Listen, Sir Sarang, I have to inform my family and also my friends and the parents of the children. How long do I stay in arrest?”

“Ma’am Papillio and Ma’am Tolisan will speak to you later and answer all your questions,” Officer Sarang evades my questions. Nevertheless, he would like to know: “How long have you known the parents and their children?”

“The children since their birth and the parents a little longer.”

2.01. Kids in the Youth Home

Excerpt:

….
Jan notices the deep-set, cloudy eyes. There’s no light in the three boys’ eyes. He whispers to his four friends: “Something is wrong with these guys,” and asks: “Did you see the strange eyes of the three boys?”

Jan’s friends nod and twitch their eyebrows very briefly and barely noticeably, as a sign of approval.

Aboy shows with the spoon to the three and says with a big smile: “Rugbyboys. They sniff glue!”

The five friends look at each other conspiratorially and quickly twitch their black eyebrows again.

Aboy asks the three boys at the neighboring table: “Are you Rugbyboys, street kids?”

His four friends stop breathing.

The three boys are unimpressed and twitch also their eyebrows, nod the heads and answer with full mouths:

“Wala pamilya,” is chewing the tallest boy.

“Wala balay,” is complementing the boy with the middle age.

“Wala eskuylahan,” is swallowing the smallest.

“No family, no home, no school,” repeats and summarizes the 12-year-old Sam without any emotions.

Aboy agrees with that and nods: “No school is okay!” His four friends and the Rugbyboys smile.

The middle slurps loud: „Maayo nga pamahaw. Kagahapon lang ang namala nga isda. Karon itlog ug corned beef.”

Dan repeats: “Delicious breakfast.”

“Phil doesn’t believe and asks: “And yesterday you have only eaten dried and fried Tambanfish? No eggs? No Corned Beef?”

The three nods eagerly and the oldest and tallest guy of the three laughs loudly: “Breakfast today is much more yummy than rugby glue!”

The middle size kid of the three raises the joke: “He has to know that, because that is a professional glue sniffer!”

The three Rugbyboys can sit hardly on their chairs about the very loud and crazy laughter. Now the tall dude is swallowing and swirling wildly with his arms. His facial color changes from dark brown to dark red. Now he’s coughing seriously, and a big bite of rice, egg and Corned Beef are falling out of his mouth on the plate. His two mates and the new boys from the village are now loudly laughing and knocking on their thighs.

Ma’am Burque is in panic. She is besides the long guy, knocks him on his back and shakes him. With a professional theater performance, he smothers, coughs and laughs tears.

Now ma’am gets angry because she sees through the game. “Stop it right now!” The situation calmed down as quickly as it escalated.

“That’s really nice that you have closed friendship so fast,” she says and sits back at the table, to the little ones.

2.00. Confusion

Excerpt:

….
But my phone is confiscated and I don’t know if the police will allow me to use it.

I’ve been standing at the cell door for about half an hour now, waiting for something to happen so that I can finally take action. But I also stand there to escape the penetrating stench of the cell. Now I smell myself too, the cold sweat and the adrenaline.

This inactivity and powerlessness demoralize me. I have to do something: inform people, request help. From minute to minute I become more nervous.

I put my hands around the rusty bars of the cell door, press my forehead against it and look apathetically onto the square of the building and then over my shoulder. Now in the dull morning light, the full extent of the garbage chaos is visible on the wall opposite the bed. I don’t even want to look at that. Then those unbelievable filthy, absolutely black, damp walls and ceiling. It actually looks like the cell was recently burned out. The animals and insects, cockroaches, the ant route and the many flies have disappeared, and the rat has not shown up either.

The boss interrupts her: “You have been through a lot tonight. Don’t be afraid. Here with us you are safe!” He nods to Ma’am Burque and, lost in thought, asks the children: “You like to sleep in a four-star hotel?”

The children don’t know what does the term “four stars” means. They don’t answer and look uncertainty to the side.

“Well, it doesn’t matter,” ends Sir Sala. “Would you like to have a snack or drink before Ma’am Burque shows you the beds?”

1.08. The horrible cell?

Excerpt:

….
Officer Sarang is cursing and the keychain jingles. Than the wire fence swings open with a squeaking and scratching on the floor. Now Officer Sarang is busy opening a lattice door. The flat building, in front of which we stand, reminiscent on a horse stable with horse boxes. As far as I can see in the dark night and lamplight, there are three more doors made of steel bars on the right. A door frame without a door can be seen on the left.
