Der Brotverkäufer

“Pandesal, Pandesal!”, tönt es von irgendwo her.
‘Oh, diese leckeren weichen Dinger. Die kleinen Brötchen sind bestimmt ganz frisch und noch ofenwarm.’ Ich bekomme Appetit.
Beim Überqueren der Straße kämpfe ich mich durch den chaotischen Straßenverkehr und muss aufpassen, nicht von so einem Jeepney oder einer Motorela umgenietet zu werden. Noch so früh am Morgen und doch schon so feuchtheiß, dass das Hemd bereits am Rücken klebt. ‘Südostasien’, sinniere ich, während ich einem heranbrausenden Motorradfahrer ohne Schalldämpfer, aber mit blauer Abgasfahne aus dem Weg springe.
“Für 20 Piso”, keuche ich und stelle fest, dass der Verkäufer der Brötchen mindestens 70 Jahre alt zu sein scheint.
Der öffnet mit einem zahnlosen Grinsen die Brotbox und befördert mit seinen dürren Fingern, die an Spinnenbeine erinnern, fünf der verführerisch duftenden Teile in eine Tüte.
Ich schaue mit großen Augen und stammle: “Aber, aber, mein Herr, bitte nicht die Brötchen anfassen” und mache Greifbewegungen mit der rechten Hand.
Der Opa schaut mich verdutzt an. Seine Augen hellen sich auf und das Grinsen wird noch breiter: “Ach, ja!” Er schüttet die Brötchen zurück in die Brotbox, kramt aus der Hosentasche einen einfachen, total verknitterten Einmalhandschuh aus transparenten Kunststoff hervor, stülpt den sich über die rechte Hand, befördert die gleichen Brötchen, die er zuvor in die Brotbox zurück geschüttet hat, erneut in die Tüte und reicht sie mir.
Perplex stehe ich da. Der mobile Brötchenverkäufer wendet sich, nachdem ich ihm die 20 Piso gegeben habe, ab und ist schon auf der Suche nach neuer Kundschaft: “Pandesal, Pandesal….”
‘Oh, those delicious soft things. The small buns are definitely fresh and still warm from the oven.’ I get an appetite.
As I cross the street, I struggle through the chaotic traffic and have to be careful not to be hit by a Jeepney or a Motorela. So early in the morning and yet so hot that the shirt sticks already at the back. ‘Southeast Asia,’ I think, jumping out of the way of a motorcyclist who is coming up without a silencer, but with a blue exhaust plume.
“For 20 piso,” I gasp and realize that the seller of the buns seems to be at least 70 years old.
He opens the bread box with a toothless grin and uses his skinny fingers, which remember me of spider legs, to put five of the buns into a bag.
I look with wide eyes and stammer: “But, but, sir, please don’t touch the buns” and make gripping movements with the right hand.
Grandpa looks confused. His eyes light up and the grin widen: “Oh, yes!” He pours the buns back into the bread box, pulls out a simple, totally crumpled disposable glove made of transparent plastic from his pocket, pulls the glove over the right hand, put the same buns that he has previously touched back into the plastic bag and hand it to me.
I stand there perplexed. The mobile bun seller turns away after I giving him the 20 piso and is already looking for new customers: “Pandesal, Pandesal ….”
