I proudly present chapter

2.20. The departure of the parents

Excerpt:

….
[The parents meet in the village to travel to their children and the arrested Tommy.]

Marie-Ann has worry lines on her forehead: “Children in the BSWD youth home! I don’t like that at all. You all know, if the BSWD got a child, they won’t give it back soon. Remember the story of Romolo.”

“Mom, don’t meet trouble halfway,” Vicente interrupts her.

Romolo Senior clears his throat loudly, is upset and looks angry. It gets quiet, and all eyes are on him: “This bitch, she runs away with a younger guy and to top it off, the BSWD is taking my children out of my house! The bitch has committed adultery and not me.” Romolo stamps his left foot lightly and immediately groans in pain. Angrily he adds: Bloody idiots from BSWD, they are idiots!”

“Dad, don’t get upset. We came back to you,” Silas replies quickly and massages Dad’s shoulders.

Marie-Ann admonishes her brother: ”Romolo, don’t curse, especially not in front of the children. We should pray together right now.”

Kagawad Jacub Castro, the mayor, has just arrived and interrupted Marie-Ann: “Who is still missing?” He sits down, looks around, lights a Marlboro and inhales deeply.

Silas nudges Michael-Loy and whispers softly: “Real Marlboro. Definitely delicious.”

Michael-Loy grins like a naughty kid: “Definitely!”

Matthew looks into the crowd: “Ernesto and Rica are missing. Wait, they are coming.”

Ernesto Restito, Sam’s father, does not sit down. He is in a hurry, is impatient and curses: “What a bummer, is there still no Motorela?”

The dusty place at the waiting seat is also the turning point of all motorcycle taxis to go back to Sendong City.

“Okay, then let’s go to the road, the highway!” Eresto scolds.

Silas shakes his head wildly: “But not with Dad’s knee!”

2.19. Sam’s sister

Excerpt:

….
Silvia goes deep breath and then says quickly: “We are waiting for Mom and Dad. All parents come!” She clears her throat and has problems speaking: “ Then we will see.”

Ma’am Solano looks up briefly from the computer keyboard and nods barely visible. Then she sets the golden reading glasses on the broad tip of her nose and continues to press the keyboard at a snail’s pace.

Aboy suddenly stomps violently with his left foot on the concrete floor. Angrily he hisses: “But why are we arrested? What about Tommy? We want to go home!”

Phil and Jan repeat: “We want to go home!”

Dan, the smallest, suddenly howls thick crocodile tears. Silvia’s blouse gets wet. He stammers: “I want to go home. I miss my mom and dad!”

Silvia also has tears in her eyes: “Tsch, Tsch,” she whispers in a choked voice and gently strokes Dan’s straight hair, “calm down, Dan, don’t cry.”

Ma’am Solano hands a roll of paper towels to Phil, who is standing next to her. He passes the roll on. The crying boys dry their tears and blow their nose on the paper towels.

“Well, well,” Ma’am Solano begins her speech, “such big boys don’t cry! And now calm down! You are not arrested. Only under custody. And your parents are coming. Then we’ll see. So there is no reason to be angry.” She gives Aboy a sharp look. Aboy looks embarrassed at the floor.

Dan is still sobbing. His slim body trembles on Silvia’s thighs.

“And now stop crying,” continues Ma’am Solano angrily. She is now standing and leaning slightly forward on the desk. “Your parents are coming. So calm down now!” she says sternly.

The boys are now realizing what Ma’am and Silvia about their parents said.

Sam massages Silvia’s sweaty neck. He asks carefully: “Is this true? They are coming? Ma and Pa?” His eyes brighten.

2.18. Back in the dungeon

Excerpt:

….
“How long ago was that?” I ask myself quietly, “nine or ten years?”

At that time Adon called me in Germany. His son Franco has second time dengue fever. The child is already bleeding from all orifices, also bleeding internally. He has no money for the blood transfusion. Without infusions, the child’s chances of survival would be zero. We both cried on the phone. It was then around 400 Euro that saved Franco’s life. When I traveled back to the village, Adon asked me if I would like to support Franco on his school education. For me a small amount of money, for the child it is the opportunity for a better future.

I sit on the edge of the bed and run through my sweaty hair. There were these doubts back then. To help or not to help?

“Damn it,” I say quietly, “did I have a choice? If the child had died of dengue fever, would I have still been able to look in the mirror? Could I have travel back to the village and look my best friend in his eyes? And then helping is a good thing. Franco is studying today. It’s a success story. Sure, I could have travel to other Southeast Asian countries, maybe Thailand, Indonesia or Vietnam. But it was too late, I already took the village people in my heart.

These are the downsides of the country. For me it’s a perfect vacation paradise, but for most of the population it’s nothing more than a brutal struggle for survival.

2.17. Three plus five boys

Excerpt:

….
In the play and bedroom, they are already expected by the three street boys. The last night has been very short, and the five friends are weary and lying now on the beds. Dan cuddles to his older brother Jan.

The tall and skinny Dodung immediately want to know what happened: “Well, that was a grenade! You lucky ones! I would give her an interview any time, any place.”

The smallest of the street boys teases Dodung cheekily: “They don’t want to talk with us rugbyboys. They don’t care about street children. We’re ugly. Nobody wants to have anything to do with us! Especially you, Dodung! They don’t care about you. You don’t get it?“

“Shut up, Necko, otherwise you will get a headbutt. You want one? Dodung suggests a headbutt.

Necko ducks his head and, like a monkey, makes a protective roof over his head with both hands and already screams, although nothing has happened yet: “Ouch.”

Bernie, the third street boy, laughs out loud: “You five are TV stars!”

Necko begins to sing and dance:

Hey ya – Tiewie-Star
Hey ya – Tiewie-Star
Hey ya – Tiewie-Star

He sings and dances like a North American Indian around the campfire around his two perplexed friends.

The five friends from the village, Sam, Aboy, Phil, Jan and his younger brother Dan, watch the goings-on with perplexed faces. Aboy and Phil start laughing and clapping with Necko’s singing. The other friends stretch on the beds and yawn comfortably.

Quickly Dodung loses her patience: “It’s enough, Necko, you monkey!” Necko is faster than Dodung and flees behind the red children’s bench and shows Dodung a long nose, but Dodung immediately loses his interest in Necko.

Dodung asks Sam: “Why did the sweet lady leave so quickly and suddenly she was in such a hurry? Did you give her the number of your cell phone?” He laughs out loud. “She’s a liar. She said, me after you. I mean the interview.”

Meanwhile, Necko attempts to annoy Dodung with long noses, but he does not pay attention.

Bernie is standing next to Dodung now: “She’s like all adults. They all lie. First promise something and then don’t keep it. They give a shit on us.”

Dodung nods and asks: “What did they actually want to know of you?”

Aboy yawns: “Everyone wants to know the same thing. Who is Tommy? Is that our friend? What did we do here yesterday? Why did we come here in the first place? Did we shower in the hotel? Blah, blah, blah.”

“Took a shower in the hotel?” repeats Dodung.

“What’s so interesting about taking a shower in the hotel?” Sam is upset.

“Come down Sam,” Jan says.

But Sam is angry: “What in the hell do they want to know? Are they all crazy here! Tommy is nice and he’s our friend. Solano has two faces. First shit friendly and then like a witch. I want to go home!”

Aboy also shouts loudly: “They are all completely stupid here. Why do they want to know all this? It doesn’t matter whether we shower or not. And the shower in the hotel is great, the rays like waves. Like the sea. (He makes wave movements with his hands). And the shower was so nice and warm. We don’t have anything like that at home.”

Phil laughs: “At home none of us has a shower in the house. The sea, the river and the washing area in the village are our showers.”

Now all eight boys laugh loudly.

Dodung agrees: “We also wash ourselves in the sea, in the river or on the water pump.”

Bernie laughs: “If we sometimes wash us!”

Necko screams: “But that’s seldom!”

The boys giggle.

Jan gets serious: “Why did they arrest Tommy and us?”

2.16. My cell phone

Excerpt:

….
[A phone call between the arrested Tommy and his foster son Franco is going on.]

Police Officer Ma’am Tolisan looks up again, startled. Then she quickly glances at her little watch and back at me. She certainly notices my panic: the red head, the sweat, my hectic breathing. I grin in agony. She keeps typing on the computer keyboard, bored.

She’s probably just here because of me! I feel guilty. My t-shirt is soaked through again from sweat. Nervously I slide back and forth on the plastic chair, which creaks uncomfortably in the silence. “Just don’t attract attention,” I tell myself.

“Franco, calm down!” I talk to my friend and foster son. But it is difficult for me to comfort Franco because I am close to tears also and have problems breathing.

Alvin giggles in the background. Franco is still sobbing, he has apparently calmed down again. A woman is talking, Alvin scolds, a toddler begins to scream as if the toy had been taken away from him.

“Oh, my god,” I think, “the situation — this stupid and completely unnecessary story — is getting completely out of control.”

Ma’am Tolisan again looks at her watch and then reproachfully to me.

“I have to end the phone call, Franco.”

Excerpt:

….
„Yes, well, ma’am, I have a visa in my passport. I’ll show you, that’s no problem.“

Ma’am Papillio reads my thoughts: „Mister Heger, we don’t want to confiscate your passport.“

There is a short pause in the conversation. Ma’am Tolisan makes notes on yellow paper. Ma’am Papillio leads the interrogation. She rubs her eyes. A little mascara smears and draws a fine line to her left temple.

I study she secretly. A little bit to much powder in her face. Maybe it covers up acne scars. But even the dark red lipstick seems a bit too daring for a police woman. There is something Japanese about her. The finely drawn face with the pretty Asian eyes, the high cheekbones and the narrow perky nose. She wears her shoulder-length hair in a ponytail today and not in a bun like last night. She looks dashing in her police uniform. A really attractive police woman!I estimate her age to be around 30 to 35 years. I wouldn’t dare ask that question. She reminds me a lot of the Japanese actress in ‚Quentin Tarantino’s‘ movie ‚Kill Bill.‘

Ma’am Tolisan, on the other hand, is the exact opposite. She looks like she has just outgrown her uniform. Unfortunately, because of her small stature, her butt apperars a too big. It seems her round face sits directly on her shoulders.

The two police women act like one person. Often one ends the other’s sentence or adds information to what has been said. This suggests a professional interrogation team.

2.15. The boy from the village

Excerpt:

….
Franco opens his eyes and immediately closes them again. He doesn’t want to get up yet. The hut he sleeps is close to the beach and not far from the children who collected the Tamban Fish in the morning. Now they frying it in coconut oil and eating the fish with rice. Along the beach in the opposite direction, Ernesto’s fishermen drinking white tuba, also known as “Coconut Wine.” They also eat Tamban Fish. Here, however, prepared as Kinilaw. The tuba goes quickly to the fishermen’s heads and they get drowsy. No wonder, as the fishermen left shortly before two o’clock in the night to go fishing.

Some time later, Franco is finally awake, but remains lying on the cot and listens to the sound of the weak surf. Stripe and point-shaped sunlight falls through some cracks and small holes in the thin walls, which consist of braided leaves of the nipa palm. The tiny window is barricaded with a bamboo shed.

Something is different than usual, notes Franco. The sea rushes gently. He hears the rustling of the palm leaves in the light wind. As usual, there is a slight fishy smell in the air. But something is different than usual, something is wrong. Franco frees himself from the mosquito net. First of all he has to come to himself. The cell phone is off. The battery is empty. Low batt, he recalls. He forgot the charger in Tommy’s apartment. When he slipped on the watch, he realized that it was already after nine o’clock. Franco slept an unusually long time. The night before, he watched the fishermen leaving and sat with relatives and friends for a long time.

Holiday, but back in study next week. What day is today? He ponders. His watch shows Sunday. Franco goes through his hair. Still not fully awake, he pulls on his shorts and removes the board from the window. Glaring sunlight hits him.
“Damn it, what’s going on?” he exclaims in a good mood. “It’s Sunday and everything seems different today, but what?”

2.12. Before TV news

Excerpt:

….
The viewers have to wait some time before the news report is broadcast. The clip about Tommy’s arrest is repeated over and over again. They also have to endure the same advertising block several times.

One of Kandayo’s teenage grandchildren surfs through channels from time to time. He is looking for more information, but there is nothing to be found on the other channels. ABC-PTV apparently reports exclusively. In the clip, the sleeping children can be seen again while the so-called “rescue operation” is in progress.
The audience is concerned with:

The children are sleeping! So why a rescue operation?
There is no danger situation to be recognized.
Tommy also doesn’t seem like anyone needs to be saved from him.
Why are people storming the room?
Why is Tommy’s hand injured?

It is discussed emotionally but without any result.

2.13. Finally TV news

Excerpt:

….
At 8:45 a.m. the news report on Tommy is finally broadcast. Much to the chagrin of the audience, all other news of the morning and the weather were broadcasted before the report on the arrest of Tommy and the boys is shown.

  • The commentator yells: „ABC-PTV exclusive!“ His voice becomes even louder, more breathless and overturns. “Tugalm City, German national arrested in a luxury hotel! Five minors saved!” The speaker goes on talking non-stop. With his intrusive style of speech, which is strongly reminiscent of the crack of a machine gun, the information literally hits the audience’s ears.
  • The first pictures show the open reception area, the lobby and the reception counter of the hotel.
  • Cut: The cottage comes into the picture. It is pitch dark night. A ceiling lamp shines weakly. The people in front of the cottage use flashlights. A short, stocky woman is knocking carefully on the cottage door. After the second knock, the glass door opens a hand’s breadth. The woman speaks briefly to the person in the room.

Silas and Michael-Loy, that’s Sila’s 14-year-old cousin, shout at the same time: “Tommy!”

  • Suddenly people storm the cottage. The fat little woman is pushed into the room by a broad, bald guy. The cameraman and the reporter with a huge microphone also storm into the room.
  • Cut: For a brief moment a handgun sparkle under Tommy’s nose in the camera light.
  • Cut: Tommy is facing the wall. A fat cop in plain clothes handcuffs Tommy’s hands on his back.

2.11. Sensation in the village

Excerpt:

….
The knowledge about a sensation in the ABC-PTV News spark an unprecedented pull in the village. Those who do not have their own television — and most of them don’t have — now flock to father Kandayo. He has the largest TV set at all.

The small forecourt in front of Michael and Vicente’s door empties quickly. Romolo, supported by his 16-year-old son Silas, limps over the short footbridge. Vicente carries little Max on her right arm, and her little daughter has already hurried ahead. Michael locks the hut and is the last to leave the jetty. He takes the blue Nokia 3310 with him and hangs the door key on the thin cord around his neck. Max sucks happily on the captured new toy, and that is Ernesto’s ballpoint pen.

“Everything will be fine!” says Vicente, sadder than she wants to be.

“Sure!” sobs Lang.

“That is a misunderstanding!” Michael interferes and tries to spread optimism.

“That will be cleared up!” Vicente also tries with optimism. It hardly sounds believable.

“Children in the BSWD! I don’t like that. You know, if the BSWD has caught a kid, it won’t be back anytime soon,” Lang shakes his head.

“Don’t conjure up ghosts,” replies Vicente with resignation.

“Let’s see the report in the news first. Then we’ll know more.” Michael ends the short conversation and takes over little Max quickly.

Kandayo’s house is just a few meters from the beach. In contrast to most bamboo huts, it is a brick-built, plastered and painted yellow small single-family house. White tiles adorn the floor. The roof is made of new and brightly shiny corrugated iron. In front of the house is a small veranda with a table, chairs and a bamboo bench. Basically, the house consists mainly of a living room. A huge flat screen is hanging on the wall on the right. The adjoining rooms appear to be added later. On the left is f and mother Kandayo’s sleeping room. Then the open little kitchen with a fireplace and the gas stove. There are kitchen utensils and the sink. The Kandayo family even have a refrigerator. There’s a tiny toilet next to the kitchen.

Steiner (CEO of the television station) watches at the loudly ticking wall clock in the dreary conference room. Suzette Zambrano and her two companions from the children’s interview are very satisfied. The cameraman and the reporter, who has been degraded to a sound engineer, now look very tired and yawn non-stop or rub their red eyes. Steiner lets himself be infected by the yawning, takes a deep sip from the coffee cup, which is fully decorated with the ABC-PTV logo, looks around and says: “Great job, you three heroes! In about 30 minutes, so around 8:30 o’clock we drop the bomb.” He smiles at the sweet Suzi: “Suzi, have you already recorded the end of the report with our slogan and your name?”

Suzi lolls on the upholstered office chair. She crossed her slender legs: “Of course, boss. But I first speak my name and then our ABC-PTV slogan”

“Sure, Suzi!”

Suzi makes a stupid face in response. General giggles. The boss cracked one of his strange jokes.

2.09. The nightmare in the dungeon

Excerpt:

….
(Continuation of the chapter 2.03.)

Officer Sarang is in a good mood and sprints back to the police station, through the first gate of the wire fence before jumping sportily over the sewer. I almost broke my foot there this morning.

Now I’m sitting on the lower bunk bed and staring into the pile of garbage. Nothing moves or rustles in there. The watch shows seven o’clock. After the little sleep last night and the simple but delicious breakfast, I get tired quickly. Exhausted, I lie on my right side. My arm is my pillow. I don’t even remember the worse condition of the cardboard on the bed. Sleep falls over me like a black cloth. I register the slight throbbing under the band aid on the back of my left hand while I’m still half asleep. Then I’m sleeping finally.

The nightmare leaves me flying in a jumbo jet full of garbage. I am the only passenger. The destination is unclear, loneliness grabs me. After a short, restless flight, the entire crew said goodbye to me with a handshake on the aircraft door. Instead of the uniform of an airline, the entire team wears dark blue police uniforms and flip-flops. In addition to the uniform, the captain is adorned with an oversized police hat with a blood-red ribbon. He grins broadly, reveals disgusting teeth, and hands me a simple box. The thin cardboard is damp and has water and mold stains. It suddenly smells earthy, musty and of damp paper. The captain continues to grin oily and whispers in barely understandable English: “Sir, this is our present to you.” His grin dies and he orders: “Open the box!” In the box are highly polished and shiny chrome handcuffs. The crew laughs loudly. Some take photos and crack jokes, others shout: “Oh, my God — oh, my God!”

The stewardess is short and stout and her laminated ID dangles from under the big boobs. She makes a grimace and speaks German: “Our present to you. For your future!”

In a panic, I rush out of the plane, down the gangway, past all the control areas, across the airport.

A security officer rushes after me. He bears a striking resemblance to Officer Sarang: “Mister Heger, sir,” he calls out, “Mister, please stand still, please wait! There’s good news for you!”

“Mister Heger, Sir,” I hear from far away, “Mister Heger, sir, wake up, Ma’am Papillio wants to speak to you.” The bunch of keys jingles and the lattice door is already creaking. I find it difficult to decipher the watch, dazed and drowsy. After a few seconds it works. It’s almost eight o’clock.
