Journey into Disaster

I proudly present chapter

16.03. Three friends

Synopsis

The German Thomas Heger, arrested in Southeast Asia, talks to his three new friends and has to say goodbye.

Excerpt

I’m watching TV again. Only twenty minutes later, the two friends are back with cake and coffee. Mik has already sent 2.000 Piso to Vicente by Western Union. He gives me the remaining money and the VISA card.

“Well, Officer Sarang and Pangutana, now it’s time to say goodbye. Thank you very much for the pleasant stay in your nice police station,” I joke.

“We’ll see you again tomorrow morning,” replies Officer Sarang, looks sadly at Officer Pangutana and adds: “At 4:30 p.m. our service ends for today. That’s why I’d like to take you back to the cell after coffee. At four o’clock is the end of the visiting time anyway. Mik can then sleep in the tower.

Sadly, we’re drinking coffee. “May Mik fill my thermos bottle with hot water.”

“Of course!”

Officer Sarang and I shake hands to say goodbye. “I will miss you, sir!”

“Come and visit us when the story has been laid down in court!” the officer replies seriously.

“Sure, I’ll bring chicken and grilled pork.”

We laugh heartily, and Officer Pangutana takes me to the cell. Mik stays at the watchtower.

17.00. Tugalm City Jail

Synopsis

This is the last chapter of the Novel.

Excerpt

We sit on the Toyota police pick-up and let ourselves be rocked by the dense traffic. Mik gave me the yellow cell phone and I have just enough load left to text Marie, sister Sabine and my mom that I am now on my way to the city jail. I also send text messages to Franco and Marielou. Then the battery is at the end, and the load is almost used up. “Mik, please buy me for 200 Piso load.”

The parents of the four children behave like newly in love teenagers and can not let go of each other. And that even though the oldest child is already at least twelve years old. They show absolutely no grief that the father has to go to jail. Mik talks to the two of them briefly and then explains to me that it is only a small robbery and that the problem will be settled next week — out of court — with a sum.

16.02. Ma’am Papillio

Synopsis

The German Thomas Heger, who was arrested in the Philippines, has a last, private conversation with the investigator Police Superintendent Ma’am Papillio.

Excerpt

Then I sign the transfer certificate to the city jail. “Ma’am, what can I expect there? Do they have Internet?”

“I know the warden personally and have put in a good word for you. You get your own bed in the cell of the trustees. This cell is not locked. As a trustee, however, you will have to do small tasks.”

“Thank you very much for the good words you have put in there for me. Do they have Internet?”

“Warden Sir Ballmoro told me on the phone that there will be a solution. Officer Sarang had informed me that you asked for it.”

“The nice Officer Sarang.”

“You found a new friend,” says Ma’am Papillio happily. She’s getting serious again. “I would like to ask you something outside the protocol. The conversation today is also not an interrogation and will not appear anywhere. You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.” Ma’am is visibly looking for words: “Do you like the little Filipinos? Because, you have chosen five very handsome boys for your journey. Isn’t there a little boy eroticism involved? Isn’t it the case that you not only like the boys, but love them?”

I swallow, have to digest what I have just heard, wipe the sweat from my face with the small cloth: “No, Ma’am!” Then I cough into the cloth: “Yes of course, I like them. I’m happy when they’re happy. When I can see the shining eyes. But no more!”

Ma’am looks at me with a standing Asian smile. Absolutely impossible to look behind it.

“Mr. Heger, I wish you all the best. I will take you to Officer Sarang now.” She looks at her little ladies‘ Rolex. “Today is Sunday. My little daughter is certainly eagerly waiting for me.”

Synopsis

The German Heger, arrested in the Philippines, is allowed to use his laptop to send his partner an email.

Excerpt

In addition to some other emails, there is also one from Marie. Immediately I open the message and am concerned about her sentences.

She writes that she is very worried, very often feels helpless and powerless, is then totally desperate and falls into depression. She wants to do something, but doesn’t know what she can do. At present she is on sick leave, because she can hardly concentrate on anything. A slight migraine torments her additionally.

After that, her text is less emotional.

She explains that she wants to call the company on Monday to explain the situation. The number of Hannes, my boss, had appeared on the display of the phone. He had tried to call. However, since she had muted the phones, she could not answer the calls. She apologizes for not being present at the video call. She feels psychologically too unstable to be able to endure my large family without me.

I read that everyone is very afraid that the German media would make the story….

16.00. The situation

Synopsis

The things Heger’s brothers said about Philippine prisons — while communicating with Syke — leave Heger no peace.

Excerpt

I startle from a nightmare and shout “Situation!” Bathed in sweat, I immediately changed the t-shirt. Confused, I look around and take a while to realize where I am: locked up, alone, in a smelly damp dungeon. It’s early morning and the birds are just starting a whistling concert in the tropical plants. Lying on the dilapidated bed again and still sleep-drunk, countless thoughts buzz through my head: Marie, why didn’t she get in touch? No email, no SMS and no call. Then my brothers and their stupid remarks in front of my mother while we were talking on Skype: “In the tropical prison under palm trees in the holiday paradise, no one wants to hang dead over the fence. They sleep there in the cells, as densely packed together as the sardines in the can. In addition, there is absolutely no privacy and you have to pay for your survival.”

Did the siblings have to spread the situation in the Philippine prisons in front of our mother so realistically? As if these facts are not commonly known. Does that also await me? Tattooed serious criminals, rival gangs, drugs, extortion or even worse and zero privacy.

During my brothers‘ imaginative remarks, I saw mom’s unhealthy ashen face color and her nervous kneading of the coffee cup and how she pushed it into the stomach area. Dad probably didn’t have the opportunity to talk to my siblings alone about mother’s health condition and the danger of Crohn’s relapse before the internet call.

I feel as if the burden on my shoulders is getting heavier and heavier…

Synopsis

The German Thomas Heger was arrested in Southeast Asia. He is accused of serious crimes. The police allow him to contact his family in Germany via the Internet. His Filipino friend Mik is also present in the police office. He is doing Skype now with parents and siblings.

Excerpt

“What is a trustee?”, Sabine interrupts me. The other waits spellbound behind her for my answer.

“Yes, well, these are detainees with special tasks. Open and close cells, distribute food. In any case, they are not locked away all day in a crowded, dirty and hot cell.” I bite my lower lip, curse myself and think: Overcrowded, dirty and hot I should have not told. I quickly add: “Mik and the friends from the village can come to visit me every day. This is all much better than here.” I quickly translate into English and add: “Unfortunately, I don’t see the nice Officer Sarang so often anymore. He stays here in his police station.” I laugh artificially.

“Tommy,” Uta shouts, “we’re really all very worried! Are you doing really well?”

“Yes, it’s okay!”, I answer with a hint of anger in my voice, because actually I want to get away from these questions — with the thoughts of my mother’s health. I try to steer the conversation in a different direction and point to Mik: “This is the father of one of the boys involved. My best friend here. He doesn’t leave my side and takes great care of me. His name is Michael, but everyone just calls him Mik. He is looking forward to seeing Sabine, mom and dad again. Where is Mickey?”

“Mickey!”, shout my older brother Lutz and immediately take the dog in his arms. „Look, Mickey, there’s Tommy on the computer.“ Mickey jaults and Mik is delighted.

“Oh, man, Tommy,” Harry groans, “You’re in the Philippine jail! We’ve seen reports on YouTube about the worst and most crowded prisons and all the dirt and garbage there. They don’t even have clean drinking water and commute there, crowded together, like the sardines in the can. Absolutely no privacy.” Lutz knows how to report: “Then the gangs there. You have to pay for your survival!” Holger, my youngest brother, goes one better and shouts: “Tommy, I don’t want to hang dead over the fence there!”

I see mom making a grimace and pressing the coffee pot into the stomach area. Her face is ashen.

My brothers, these idiots! Can’t they just shut up? I shout in an angry voice into the built-in microphone of the laptop: “Yes, this is certainly the case in Manila or in other major cities, but not….

15.04. Disturbing news

Synopsis

The German Thomas Heger was arrested in Southeast Asia. He is accused of serious crimes. The police allow him to contact his family in Germany via the Internet. His Filipino friend Mik is also present in the police office.

Excerpt

“Tommy, no Skype and no Mickey today?” wonders Mik.

“Yes, right away. I first replied to my boss. I’m sending text messages to my family that I’m online now. At 5 p.m. we have an appointment.”

The SMS is sent quickly. I hope I have time to read my dad and sister’s emails before Skype rings.

Mik is busy with an easy game in the new cell phone.

Dad’s e-mail first. He writes, if I am actually not well, I should not write this to mom by SMS and not show it when we do skype! She had been in the hospital a few times because of this chronic intestinal history — Crohn’s disease — for a long time. I know that and we must carefully with! He is very worried about mom, because she is getting more nervous by the day. He notices this in the increased cigarette consumption and the trembling of her hands. Mom has also been complaining about pain in the intestines since yesterday. I close the disturbing e-mail with wet eyes. Because I don’t want Mik or Sarang to notice my depression, I cough artificially and wipe my eyes with my little cloth. I have a dull feeling in my intestines.

In my brain it hammers: Damn, now mom gets a Crohn’s disease relapse, and I’m to blame! ? The sweat is on my forehead, and I have to wipe my face. “Damn shit!”

Mik is just putting two cups of hot water on the table. He obviously noticed the change in my state of mind: “Tommy, what’s going on? You have red eyes.”

“My mom is not doing well. It’s because of me. She is in worry. Mik, it’s because of this story. This bitch of social worker does not know what she is doing. I hate this woman! My parents have their illnesses. This Solano destroys ….

15.03. New bad news

Synopsis

The German Thomas Heger was arrested in the Philippines. He has a conversation with a local attorney and friends. The attorney tells him how things could be settled in his country.

Excerpt

The flat files are piled up on Officer Sarang’s desk. He has already returned from our lunch and now seems to be immersed in his office work. I speak softly, so he can’t hear us.

“Vicente, Mik, would you file a lawsuit against me?”

Vicente swallows herself, quickly drinks a little coke and replies: “No, never, Tommy. Why? No reason. The children have always enjoyed being with you. Before you came this year, Phil and the others were already very excited: Tommy celebrates Christmas with us!”

Mik, Vicente’s husband, shakes his head violently and adds: “Tommy, you are our friend. There is no reason to do so! We would never file a case against you!”

“There you see it, attorney. The parents would never file a lawsuit against me.”

“We would have explained to the parents why the cases are necessary.”

“Attorney in Germany it would be unthinkable to solve the problem in this way.”

“Oh, of course it’s not easy here with us either. Especially when children are involved. But on the other hand, the story is very mysterious and the evidence seems to be weak. At least that’s what I heard through hearsay. By the way, I talked to the head-off of BSWD Sendong City about it.”

“You can easily talk to the head-off of the BSWD?”

“Of course I talk to the BSWD. Sir Pagut, the head-off, is a good acquaintance of mine. Sendong City is not a big city. Everyone knows everyone — so to speak.”

“Then we would have a foot in the door in the BSWD?”

“Currently, the responsibility lies with the BSWD here in Tugalm and unfortunately not in Sendong City.”

15.02. Bitter cognition

Synopsis

The German Thomas Heger was arrested in the Philippines. He has a conversation with two Germans and a Filipino attorney. He has very bitter cognition.

Excerpt

Frank becomes restless: „Bail, bail? I hear always bail! Tommy, look at it realistically. No judge in the Philippines will grant you bail. Exactly for risk of escape! He loses his fucking job when that happens.”

“Well, we don’t want to be so pessimistic. And nobody will lose his job, Frank,” Wolfgang replies.

Attorney Tensung takes the floor: “There have been quite a few foreigners who have been granted bail. Although in different cases. Bail would be possible if we manage to convince the judge that the burden of evidence is very low. You asked for an amount. Well, I have to send my office help here to Tugalm City on Monday to the court and to Ma’am Papillio. Then the motion for bail. So I would estimate 5.000 Piso.”

“That’s okay!” I answer quickly. “Wolfgang, my family had transferred 5.000 Euro to your account. So that’s about 250k Piso. Then De Baron got 120k. There is still 130k Piso left in your account?”

“Yes, approximately. But there was something going on for transfer fees. That was not a small amount. In total, you still have about 122k Piso.”

“Well, Wolfgang, then give Attorney Tensung 20k.”

“Attorney, please keep a list of expenses. This allows us to keep track of things.”

“Of course, of course!” the attorney quickly replies. “How long have you been imprisoned?”

“Tomorrow it’s a full fourteen days, sir.”

“Okay, then we’ll meet for the next visit to Tugalm City Jail.”

Wolfgang and Frank look questioning.

Attorney Tensung explains: “After two weeks detainees must be taken to the City Jail. That’s a requirement by law.”

15.01. Two Germans, one Filipino

Synopsis

The German Thomas Heger was arrested in Southeast Asia. Now two Germans visit him accompanied by a Filipino attorney.

Excerpt

What a surprise! Wolfgang Schmidt, Frank Matschulat and a Filipino unknown to me enter Officer Sarang’s office. Kagawad Jacub Castro jumps up, he seems to know the local. They greet each other like old friends. Mik and his Vicente move tightly into a corner on the bamboo cane bench, making way for Frank, who is over two metres tall and the Filipino. When sitting down, we greet each other briefly. Wolfgang Schmidt settles down on a flat bamboo chair, puts a bunch of keys on the table and I understand that he is the driver of the group of three. Jacub is still delighted and introduces the bald gentleman: “Tommy, this is Attorney Andrada Rodjen Miomoto Tensung from Sendong City.”

The funny-sounding long name of the attorney puts a smile on my face. He will be about the same age as me. Maybe about his late forties. Obviously, he doesn’t weigh much less than me, but he’s no taller than about a meter and seventy centimeters.

The attorney rises a little, reaches out to me in greeting and shares with a broad grin: “Just call me Attorney Tensung. I have Japanese roots.”

The fact that he guesses my thoughts makes him sympathetic. But maybe many react to his name like I do.

“Nice to meet you!” We talk in English so that Attorney Tensung understands what is being spoken.

The attorney looks at Vicente: “Aren’t you the daughter of Commander Tanio? The unofficial rebel leader of the communist New People’s Army?”

Vicente appears embarrassed. “Yes, that’s my father,” she replies sadly.

“Your father was a truly respected citizen of our city. Of course, at the time it was only assumed that your father was a rebel leader and commander. To this day, there is no evidence of this. Sad story of how he had to give his life in one of these unspeakable purges.”

Vicente’s voice sounds bitter: “He, his brother and two others were brutally shot with a machine gun!”

Excerpt

Yesterday’s visit day of the parents and friends from the village I would call a failure. Damn, how can I untie the Gordian knot as quickly as possible? As almost always, I end the useless brooding without result.

I hear key clanging at the fence gate and a cheerful Officer Sarang shouting: “Good morning, Mr. German! Did you sleep well? I heard that it was a bit louder last night?”

I turn the reddened spots on my hands shamefully out of Sarang’s field of vision, because my freak out is now terribly embarrassing. Anyway, nothing broke. I am relieved, because the noise will probably not have any consequences. These wonderful sounds of the cracking lock and the squeaking of the cell door when opening delight me.

“First, take a shower, Mr. Tommy, um, Mr. Heger. You will be happy, because your loyal friends are already waiting for you and have brought a hearty breakfast with them.”

-★-

Vicente embraces me wildly and warmly as a greeting. Mik and Kagawad just shake my hand. I feel good, because I took a shower and have breakfast with my friends now. In fact, today there are no sweet rolls, but a strong chicken soup with rice. Of course, we drink the sugar-sweet instant coffee with it.

We’ve eaten for a few minutes, when Kagawad suddenly asks: “Sir Sarang, what’s next for our Tommy?”

Surprised, I look up from my soup.

Officer Sarang answers frankly: “Next week, Mr. Heger …

Journey into Disaster

I proudly present chapter

14.07. Rage!

Synopsis

All the anger and frustration breaks out of Thomas Heger. The German was arrested in Southeast Asia under mysterious conditions.

Excerpt

The group from the village left around 4 p.m. In addition to the 7.000 Piso for the Jeepney, I also handed each visitor 500 Pisos as a thank you. The teenagers grinned broadly as each of them puts 250 Pisos in their pockets. Then I gave amounts to Kagawad and Mik with his Vicente, because they want to stay in a cheap hotel. The mothers Rica and Lang received 2.000 Piso, for the children’s food in the Youth Home tomorrow. The farewell was uncomplicated and emotionless, with the exception of Marie-Ann. She had to say a prayer before the visitors left. Everyone seemed relieved that this unpleasant visit was coming to an end.

For a long time I couldn’t stand it in front of the TV in the office. Too much went through my head. Officer Sarang got stuck at one of those cheap shows — a stupid singing contest. Without being able to hold pitches and with thin voices, the dressed up women believe that their loud whining is professional singing. From this nasty and weird yelling, I quickly got a headache. Then one of the upcoming superstar ladies whined this horrible song “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion. That was the final straw. Before I felt nauseous, I asked the officer around 5:30 p.m. to take me to the cell. The officer and I have not said a word about the many cruel facts that have gradually come to light today. But I didn’t seek a conversation either.

Behind me, the cell door squeaks and the lock cracks when locking. Officer Sarang wishes me a good night, also closes the gate of the wire fence. He disappears at dusk.
