Journey into Disaster

I proudly present chapter

14.02. The visitors

Synopsis

The German Thomas Heger, who was arrested in the Philippines, has his friends from the remote village as visitors.

Excerpt

Michael is already hugging his wife Vicente. Meanwhile, I greet the parents and my friends: Ernesto and Rica Restito and their son Jonathan, Matthey and Lydia Barcella, she is only briefly called “Lang” by everyone and Romolo Taslig Senior, who came with his son Silas. I am happy about my friend, the local mayor Jacub Castro, who is called “Kagawad” by everyone and am also happy about the nice-looking Marielou, who brought her parents Wilfredo and Rosita Taslig. Mikel-Loy and his uncle Richard Taslig are torn between the joy of meeting and the worried pity they feel for me. In the faces of my visitors are joy and sadness. Frank’s neighbor from the village, she is the owner of the Jeepney, everyone calls her “Aunty Edin,” has even brought her four-year-old daughter. The child cheerfully calls my name when she sees me and immediately makes arrangements to hop on my lap after I have taken my seat again. Aunty Edin’s husband, like many Filipinos, is a seaman and at sea. Vicente’s mother Marie-Ann, a born Taslig, carries a large bag of cooked food, drinks, bread and fruit, which she places at my feet. Smiling, she says: “For you, Tommy. You must pray! Don’t forget to pray!”

I nod and croak a faint: “Thank you.” A lump presses on my vocal cords and I try to wash down the dumpling with a sip of mineral water that comes out of the bag.

There are other young people from the village. Some of whom I don’t even know by name. They nod encouragingly at me with a standing smile and remain silent at a distance on the walls. Now everyone looks at me expectantly. Suddenly there is a depressing silence. The seconds pass and it bursts out of me: “What is your plan? Who do you want to visit first? The prosecutor, the attorney or the children? Do you want to talk to the police?“ I’m looking at Officer Sarang.

“Oh, Ma’am Papillio apologizes. She has an important appointment with the boss, um, with our major.”

Kagawad replies: “Franco said the attorney wouldn’t come back to his office until around one p.m. We’ll first visit the prosecutor in the Hall of Justice. I hope he has time for us.”

“I hope so too! Where is Franco?”

Die Rezension!

Originaltext:

Uschi P., 10.12.2020
Grauenvolle, unglaublich spannende Geschichte – Aufeinanderprallende Kulturen!

14.01. Racism and man-hunting

Synopsis

Alone in the Philippine dungeon, the German Thomas Heger comes up with stupid thoughts.

Excerpt

I’m frustrated and outraged. My story would never happen to a Filipino. No one would call the police. Just because I am a foreigner, the police have been called! Wherever the anonymous caller comes from — the village or from Tugalm City — it doesn’t matter. The fact “Foreigners” plays a decisive role. This is nothing more than a man-hunting for foreigners and racism! Or is this about money? About bounty? Perhaps the Youth Welfare Office receives subsidies or is financially supported in the event of complaints of abuse? The non-governmental organizations in the world can exploit this story extremely well for their purposes: the collection of donations. If only I had just gone back to Sendong City on the same day! “A foreigner with five little Filipinos at the hotel.” To me, too, this sentence sounds spectacular. A story with this headline certainly sells brilliantly in the media. I roll back and forth on the bet-mat: Isn’t this really about me or about the alleged victims, namely the five boys? Is this just about some people’s profiling addiction and above all about money? About my money? Is it about donations to governmental or non-governmental organizations? I can only guess. Did I approach the story too naively? What could I have done differently — better? Should I have insisted on my rights much more aggressively from the beginning? But if that had led to the goal — my release? Would the police then treat me as courteously as they have done so far? This Attorney De Baron seems to be a mistake. I couldn’t have known that. I want to give him one more chance. He must immediately submit an application to lay down the proceedings for lack of evidence and should not torch for long, but immediately submit the application for bail. Something must finally be done – as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, I stand at the lattice bar door of the cell and shake it slightly, but I would rather hit and kick wildly against it. I have to hold back so as not to shout from the full throat: “Fuck in the hell, finally let me out of this inhumane hole — that lousy dungeon! Not even animals are kept like that! What gives the Philippines the damn right to humiliate me like that? Release me!”

But finally, there! Officer Sarang hurriedly arrives the corner of the building. In his hand he carries the key chain.

Frustration and anger give way to boundless joy when Officer Sarang cracks the padlock and squeaks the cell door. “Your friend Mr. Kabaltos is already waiting. He bought breakfast. But I think you probably need a shower first.”

“Oh yes, a shower and a good coffee, that’s what I need now. A new day, sir, let’s see what it brings.”

“I hope only good things, Mr. Heger.”

14.00. Youth Home at night

Synopsis

Some boys talk at night in the Youth Yome.

Except

Dan sobs and whispers softly: “Jan.” But he sleeps deeply and Dan shakes the shoulder of his big brother more violently: “Jan, wake up!”

Finally Jan moves. It takes a moment, then Jan rubs his eyes and sits up. Dan immediately snuggles up to Jan and says in a choked voice: “Jan, I think mom and dad have already forgotten us, because they don’t visit us anymore. I miss them, our sisters and the whole village very much. When will we finally go home?” Dan begins bitterly to cry. It is difficult for him to formulate his next question: “And why are we here?”

Jan is looking for something to clean Dan’s howling and sweaty face, but finds only his little cloth and tries to calm his brother while drying tears: “Dan, now stop crying. We have been here for so long and since Monday is school. They have to send us to school soon and me to my boxing training.”

“Yes, but why the moms don’t come anymore? They were always here. Now they have gone back to the village and have already forgotten us. That’s right, Jan?” Dan slowly calms down.

“What are you doing?” murmurs Phil drowsily.

“Nothing, we’re just talking because Dan has woken up,” Jan replies softly.

“Now I can’t sleep,” says Phil, who has now come to the brothers and sits down with them.

“Me either.” Dan sniffs his nose.

“Why did you cry?” Phil wants to know.

“Oh, I dreamed we would stay here until we grew up and no one would visit us. Then I woke up and was very sad. Jan slept and didn’t hear me.”

Jan shakes his head: “And I dreamed I caught two kilos of the best fish and wanted to sell it in the village. I was already looking forward to the 300 Pisos and then you wake me up.”

The three boys giggle.

13.05. Communication

Synopsis

Thomas Heger, arrested in the Philippines, is allowed to communicate with his family in Germany.

Excerpt

Franco and Mik got the money from the ATM, and I watched the usual disasters of the world on CNN-Philippines. Of course, nothing was reported about that unimportant story and me. What’s happened? I muse during the World Weather. Five sleeping children and a German have been dragged out of a cottage. No one has been unclothed and there has been no murder or manslaughter, nor have children been put up for sale.

For tomorrow’s trip of the parents and some of my friends I gave Franco 10k Pisos. Then Mik and Franco each needed an extra 1.000 Pisos. Franco traveled back to the village and Mik went to his cousin and wanted to bring breakfast to the children in the BSWD and me tomorrow morning. I would like to have the difficult conversation with my family this evening alone. I also have to write the email to my boss. For this I need full concentration. How to explain to the company that I will come back from vacation at least two months later because I am….

13.04. The world keeps turning

Synopsis

The German, Thomas Heger, arrested in the Philippines, has conversation in the office of the police station.

Excerpt

Officer Sarang has thought of soap and a brush, but scrubbing hands in the CR takes time. The black color of the stamp pad seems waterproof. Back in Sarang’s office, Franco jumps up. He took a seat in the sitting area.

I am honestly surprised: “Franco, you are here? You’re not in General de Santos, back at university? Did you still see Mik when you came? He’s going to Attorney De Baron. We can’t find this guy, although I desperately need him now!”

“No, I didn’t see Mik. Tommy, we talked in the morning. The parents, Marielou, the Kagawad and some other friends were present. We had the idea to rent a bus. Aunt Edin, Frank’s neighbor in the village, would provide her Jeepney. Then all parents and some friends could visit you tomorrow morning. We could pick up De Baron and come here, talk to the policewomen and then go to the prosecutor in the Hall of Justice. We want to make it clear that your story is not true. That’s why all parents and your friends stand by you. But we need money for this! The Jeepney needs oil and gasoline and of course the rent for Edin. Then also something for the driver and of course food for everyone. It’s about sixteen people. If you agree, I would return to Sendong City today to bring the money there.”

Mentally, I’m drifting away and hear Franco only as if through cotton wool. Exhausted, I sit on the flat bamboo chair, with a sad face and hanging corners of my mouth. My rigid gaze goes nowhere. The sudden calm makes me frightened.

Synopsis

Excerpt

Mik surprisingly enters the office of Officer Sarang, beams with joy and sits down with me. He has bags with him. From one it smells like grilled chicken. The second contains liter bottles of lemonade and mineral water.

My face probably speaks volumes, because Mik cautiously asks: “Not good, Tommy?”

I wake up from a slight trance, clear my throat and answer monosyllabically: “Not good, Mik. The story will probably take a little longer. How are the guys in the BSWD doing?”

“Tommy, they’re fine. They studied again with this young educator for school and were very happy about the chicken.”

“Damn, I must speak to Attorney De Baron now. He has to come here immediately. Mik, this stupid woman…..

13.01. I tremble

Synopsis

What does the German Thomas Heger, who was arrested in the Philippines, experience in the Hall of Justice?

13.01. I tremble

On the back of the yellow t-shirt is printed in bold black letters: “PNP Detainee.” It’s definitely some sizes too small. I squeeze myself in, look like a pressed sausage and am afraid that it will burst the first time I deep inhale. The policewomen see it and let me put on my black t-shirt again. The reason for the appointment in the court, they have not yet given, despite my repeated inquiries. They are very busy, and Ma’am Papillio now asks me if I would like to call my attorney with my cell phone to ask him to come to the Hall of Justice.

His phone is off and in his law office only the answering machine starts. I report on attorney’s tape what is happening right now, and explain to the policewomen that my attorney — like all attorneys! — is at training and will not be back until tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.

The policewomen are surprised, because they have heard about the training of the attorneys, but this is not mandatory but voluntary and takes place several times.

Now it is me who shakes his head in amazement. Franco has acted as if further training was vital for De Baron’s survival and could not be postponed under any circumstances. I’m annoyed. Now valuable time has passed unused and this attorney is not at my side in my difficult hours. The guy is becoming more and more strange. The main thing is to pocket the money first! I distract myself with optimism, otherwise I will only get really angry. Maybe there’s the release paper right away? But immediately I have doubts. Why are my attorney, the yellow t-shirt and shaving necessary? A strange feeling creeps up on me and I doubt it again today. Did Ma’am Papillio let me take a shower this morning because of the visit to the Hall of Justice and should I shave, therefore? For a release paper? I ask again, as Ma’am Papillio is standing in front of me to handcuff me: “Ma’am, what is the reason for the court date?”

“I only received the information to take you to the Hall of Justice. You will find out everything else in a moment.”

“Are these silly handcuffs really necessary?”

-★-

Mik did not witness the drama with the much too small yellow shirt, as he immediately turned left to the exit in front of Sarang’s office to visit the children in the BSWD. I turned right towards Ma’am Papillio’s office. How I would have liked to march out of the building with Mik. I looked after him wistfully.

We are just entering the Hall of Justice, whose rectangular courtyard is without a roof and which is decorated with a few unkempt plants.

Today we are not sitting in this gloomy hallway, but in the said courtyard, just behind the main entrance and in front of an office door that leads to an open-plan office. Employees and visitors are constantly rushing in and out. Without exception, everyone stops briefly when she or he sees me and gawks shamelessly, as if I had a bloody skin disease on my face. I am again in this situation that no one wants to be in.

What will happen?

I feel my stomach in an unpleasant way, I am hot and cold at the same time, sweat a lot, my head roars and I feel miserable.

Damn, what awaits me behind this door? Win or lose?

If only the Filipinos didn’t gloat so impertinently! I am the only foreigner here. Freshly shaved, but the only long-nose in handcuffs, which is guarded by two policewomen and two heavily armed officers. All in all, these are not good omens for the upcoming date. Damn, where did I get in? This is a horror movie! The tension is once again palpable. Like in the hotel, just before I was arrested. There are those negative vibrations again. When I look at Ma’am Papillio’s face, I immediately realize that she knows more than she says. Asian smile or not, her pretty but today very worried face And all Filipinos, employees here as well as visitors to the Hall of Justice seem to know what is going on here. The whole world seems to know what is happening to me.

Only one stupid guy doesn’t know — and that’s me!

Synopsis

A new day begins. What will the German Thomas Heger, who was arrested in the Philippines, experience?

Excerpt

In the office of the police station

The office door opens, and the police student brings the rolls and mineral water. Mik follows him, who also proudly carries a bag of rolls.

-★-

After a short and warm greeting, it bursts out of me: “Mik, how was the meeting yesterday? What was the result?”

“Nothing at all, just like in the BSWD.” Mik suddenly appears, as if he has accidentally leaked a secret.

“BSWD?”

Mik blows embarrassed into the hot coffee: “Yes, so, the BSWD in Sendong City had invited us parents.”

“And what did they want from you?”

“Actually, just hear how we feel about you, why the children have been with you and how long we have known you. But we showed them from the BSWD that we stand by you! We pointed that out very clearly!” Mik prefers not to tell anything about Ernesto’s, Rica’s and Lang’s strange behavior.

I am uncertain and surprised about the meeting in the BSWD and wonder why the BSWD invites the parents and not the police: “Were the Kagawad, Franco and Marielou also there?”

“No, Tommy, just us parents. Even Romolo’s ex was present. But she didn’t talk much, because she was drunk the night before.”

“What about your meeting? The parents and friends wanted to sit down together?”

Mik giggles: “That’s why Romolo’s ex was drunk. Of course, we, all fathers, also had a drink. Franco got Tanduay Rum, beer and something to eat. The mood was good!” Mik also conceals the dissonance between Romolo’s ex-wife, Ernesto, Rica and Lang and the rest of the parents.

Dungeon

With a Sunday newspaper I’m constantly moving air to me. Do I sweat so much because of the wagging or because of the tropical heat?

I have already tipped the bottle with the urine out of the cell window several times. The rain washes that away immediately. For dinner there are spongy-soft rolls and lukewarm water. In keeping with the situation, a saying comes to mind that makes me smile: Stricter prison conditions with water and bread. My renewed concern about the running out of drinking water makes me use it sparingly. I don’t even dare to think about making phone calls: What would I do with it? It’s Wednesday. My parents certainly have one of their many doctor’s appointments. Sabine and Marie are working. It would be interesting to know if the Embassy in Manila can help. Carefully I take the two steps from the bed to the cell door and back again. “Damn it,” I curse, because like this morning, the company comes to mind, “I urgently need to let them know that I’m not appearing next Monday. My boss, dear colleagues, and even the entire company are waiting for me. They will probably wait in vain. What will happen to my new project? I have to get out of here and talk to the stupid attorney on the phone. Damn it! He has to pull out all the stops to somehow get me out of here. And then quickly get away here. Maybe with a vessel first to Indonesia or Sumatra, then back to Germany and afterwards, never again to the Philippines!”

I successfully suppress the burgeoning bitterness and despair with distraction. I simply sketch the incorrectly solved Sudoku in my little book and solve them again. Successful this time.

Outside it is already dark, the rain does not subside and continues to dampen any noise. Around seven o’clock I finally fell asleep exhausted.

Village

Mik is standing at a Sari-Sari store in the village and is currently buying five More cigarettes for a total of 15 Piso. When fishing the coins out of his wallet, he notices the small folded blue thousand note in the right corner of the always empty compartment for paper money. He no longer had that money in mind. It was actually 2.000 Piso that Tommy gave yesterday for the children’s lunch today. However, the mothers Rica and Lang had refused the entire amount. So half of the money stayed with him because he didn’t dare to tell Tommy that the mothers had rejected some of the money. The two mothers have behaved strangely since their conversation in the BSWD in Tugalm City. Apparently, they distance themselves from Tommy. This surprises him very much, because without exception everyone in the village — as well as his wife Vicente and him — are sure that the story is just a huge misunderstanding and Tommy will soon be released.

1.000 Piso extra money, Mik reflects. He buys Coke, rolls and potato chips for two hundred Piso, brings it to Vicente and the children, who of course enthusiastically pounce on the treats. Mik quickly says goodbye to his family and heads for the Billiard Hall.

“Billiard Hall” is exaggerated, because there are only two worn and dusty tables for pool billiards. The sides of the coarsely made shed are open, and the roof is made of thin corrugated iron. Boys sit on the half-height wooden fence, watch the men’s game and discuss before each shot how best to play it. Mik enters the next game with 100 Piso and wins. The next game is scheduled for 200 Piso. He wins again and — to everyone’s delight — buys a bottle of Tanduay Rum. The mood is great and Mik in his element. Some friends notice that Mik has more cash than usual in his pockets. They invite him to card games. Here, he wins, so that his balance grows to over 2.500 Piso. Now is the best time to stop. Mik still thinks, but passion has gripped him. Less than three hours later, the entire amount is lost and worse, he goes home frustrated with 500 Piso of debt. He has a week to repay the borrowed sum. After all, he is not as drunk today as he was last night and tomorrow morning he wants to go back to Tommy. Four hours of sleep are enough. On the bamboo bench in front of his house he stretches out and nods immediately away.
