The things Heger’s brothers said about Philippine prisons — while communicating with Syke — leave Heger no peace.

I startle from a nightmare and shout “Situation!” Bathed in sweat, I immediately changed the t-shirt. Confused, I look around and take a while to realize where I am: locked up, alone, in a smelly damp dungeon. It’s early morning and the birds are just starting a whistling concert in the tropical plants. Lying on the dilapidated bed again and still sleep-drunk, countless thoughts buzz through my head: Marie, why didn’t she get in touch? No email, no SMS and no call. Then my brothers and their stupid remarks in front of my mother while we were talking on Skype: “In the tropical prison under palm trees in the holiday paradise, no one wants to hang dead over the fence. They sleep there in the cells, as densely packed together as the sardines in the can. In addition, there is absolutely no privacy and you have to pay for your survival.”
Did the siblings have to spread the situation in the Philippine prisons in front of our mother so realistically? As if these facts are not commonly known. Does that also await me? Tattooed serious criminals, rival gangs, drugs, extortion or even worse and zero privacy.
During my brothers’ imaginative remarks, I saw mom’s unhealthy ashen face color and her nervous kneading of the coffee cup and how she pushed it into the stomach area. Dad probably didn’t have the opportunity to talk to my siblings alone about mother’s health condition and the danger of Crohn’s relapse before the internet call.
I feel as if the burden on my shoulders is getting heavier and heavier…
