14.03. Parents and Prosecutor

Synopsis

The parents and the mayor from the village meet the chief prosecutor in Tugalm City. What experiences do they have?

Excerpt

The two guards at the reception of the Hall of Justice did not expect this rush. After a short consultation with the Chief Prosecutor of the City of Tugalm City Sir Escandor, the parents and also the Kagawad, in his function as mayor of the village, are allowed to enter the building. Before that, however, they register in the book for visitors and undergo a body search. All other villagers are not allowed. They decide to go to the next street restaurant on the spur of the moment.

Now the group sits somewhat undecided in the office of the chief prosecutor. The parents wait and look around respectfully. When have they ever talked to such a high-ranking person? Only the face of Kagawad Jacub Castro shows determination. He, as an elected mayor, is used to dealing with higher employees of the state, even if it is not commonplace for him.

First, a secretary appears and is surprised by the many visitors. A few seconds later, the chief prosecutor also enters his office. He looks at the parents and smiles tellingly. Kagawad would call it mocking. Escandor sits down at his opulent brown mahogany desk, clears his throat and says: “Well, you are the parents of the five boys who were picked up together with a German in the hotel?” He looks at Michael (Mik), Rica and Lang: “Some of you are known to me. What brings you to me so surprisingly?” He clapped his hands encouragingly: “What can I do for you?”

Ernesto and the Kagawad exchange nervous glances. Then the Kagawad raises the word: “Sir, excuse us for visiting you so unannounced and thank you for taking time for us. I’m with the parents in my function as local mayor — as Kagawad of the village — where all parents and children live. My name is Jacub Castro, sir.”

Michael harshly interrupts the Kagawad: “And Tommy, Thomas Heger, who also lives in the village!”

His wife Vicente pushes him barely visible to the others, and he falls silent.

The chief prosecutor grins wider. His secretary, who is busy at a small desk at the laptop, wincing, but then continues to work unmoved.

Kagawad Jacub Castro looks at Michael in disbelief and continues: “Yes, um, Sir Escandor, with all due respect, sir, but we all agree that Thomas Heger is innocent.”
