Journey into Disaster

I proudly present chapter

6.05. Nongovernmental Organization

The Philippine police investigators Ma’am Papillio and Ma’am Tolisan have a conversation with a foreign Christian NGO.

Excerpt:

….
“Sir, what can we actually do for you?” asks Ma’am Papillio curiously.

Mc Bride clears his throat: “Police Superintendent Ma’am Papillio, our Prowoch association and other NGOs have entered into an alliance with globally active NGOs that protect and save women and children from predators like this Heger — the German. We now have social and political contacts at the highest level and circles. That goes as far as the former American President and his presidential family.”

“And how do we fit into your story, sir?” asks Ma’am Papillio without any emotions. It’s all too grand and too far away for her.

“Financial support, Ma’am. We plan, especially in cases like this to support the entire Filipino judicial system. As you know, we give other sacrifices and the BSWD already supported by us.”

Ma’am Papillio interrupts the foreigner: “I know the latter. It is on your homepage.”

Mc Bride holds his hand in front of his mouth and whispers: “We support officially and unofficially in the Philippines. For example we already give some judges money so that they promulgate the correct judgments against foreigners. He winks at the policewomen and leans forward: “Ma’ams, you understand what I mean. But you and I have to be successful for that. I heard from a reporter that the parents are visiting this German. They are friendly to him. Ma’am, please help me get the parents on our side.”

Ma’am Tolisan’s eyes shine at the words “financial support.” Her boss, however, is thoughtful. After a few seconds Ma’am Papillio replies: “Sir, we are, of course, very happy about any kind of support. Nevertheless, I have to disappoint you, because it is against our statute on police work and neutrality in investigations. Therefore, we will not influence the parents or the alleged victims. However, feel free to travel to the village to talk to the families and the relatives of the children.”

6.04. Two mothers and a reporter

Two mothers want to visit the German arrested in the Philippines, but being interviewed by a penetrant reporter.

Excerpt:

….

Dumampos takes a short break and starts the sound recorder on his cell phone again: “So, there is the supporter and in return your boys can travel and sleep with this Tommy in the hotel?”

“No, sir,” Rica replies, “It was a pleasure trip. If the roads hadn’t been so bad and increased travel time so much, they would have returned the same day.”

“And Tommy would give the children back to us that evening,” Lang adds quickly and says irritably: “We have to go now, the food is getting cold. Come on, Rica!”

Dumampos persists: “As mothers, have you never had doubts about Heger? Were you not too careless, too gullible?”

The women shake their heads violently.

“Why do you think this Heger comes to our country and looks after your children? That’s strange, isn’t it?”

Rica and Lang don’t answer, feel pressured and just want to leave. But the reporter blocks their way through the first gate and becomes more and more piercing and louder. To make matters worse, he is now sweating profusely and has bad breath: “Is the Heger a gay man? Do you know the term ‚pedophile‘ ma’ams?”

Rica and Lang are now completely confused. They had never thought deeply about the meaning of this word. Sometimes heard on TV or on the radio news. It was never their subject. That was a few questions too many. What this guy wants is completely unclear.

Lang pushes Rica violently: “Come on, let’s go.”

Dumampos wants to ask the next question, but will be interrupted.

6.03. Press conference out of control

Attorney De Baron is at the police press conference and has his own view of things …….

Excerpt:

….
There are three activists from the Antitrafficking Board, recognizable by their uniform t-shirts, accompanied by a gray, curly-haired, gaunt and sporty-elegant-looking foreigner. He took out a notepad and pen. De Baron recognizes from the logo on the foreigner’s t-shirt that the guy is an employee of this non-governmental organization from Manila. Certainly a high-ranking official.

He remembers the forty-year-old: I only saw him recently in a report on CNN-Philippines! De Baron recalls contemptuously: After the business with pickled fruits from organic cultivation did not generate the profit, they had hoped for, they are now focusing their business model on saving people.

In his eyes they are practicing modern colonialism. As if the Philippines cannot solve their problems on their own. And don’t these self-proclaimed human rescuers have enough to do in their own countries? So are the NGOs already called on the scene? Bad for Heger, good for me. It will be difficult to defend the German. Public pressure on the public prosecutor is increasing every day. He doesn’t think anymore that the case will be dismissed on the prosecutor’s desk for lack of evidence. The foreigner dragged five Filipinos underage into the hotel. If a Filipino had done that, it would have been absolutely normal. Nobody would ask or call the police. But with a foreigner it’s a completely different matter. De Baron wipes the sweat from his forehead. It becomes hot because the four standing fans in the corners of the room do not do their job well. In addition, the lamps of the cameras. He keeps brooding: Isn’t that racism when, unlike Filipinos, the police are notified immediately? But that doesn’t matter now, because it is what it is: Heger sits in the trap. And no one is interested in dismissing the case quickly. For me that’s only advantageous, because each hearing must be paid in cash by the client. Not without reason, the item “Hearings and Court Days” is not in the offer to Heger! De Baron hides his satisfied grin behind an elegant handkerchief.

Ma’am Papillio taps the tabletop with her pen. De Baron is torn from his thoughts. The press conference starts half an hour late.

Novel

Journey into Disaster

Hello my dear visitors. Weekend is coming and I proudly present chapter

6.02. Crazy Morning

Thomas Heger, arrested in the Philippines, has his first painful experiences with the media.

Excerpt:

….
The reporter starts with his questions about myself, my marital status, why and how long I’m staying in the Philippines, whether I know the children and their parents better and why we were at the hotel.

I patiently answer the questions, and I quickly find myself confronted with the catchwords sex tourism, cyber crime, child pornography and human trafficking. He aggressively asks if I am informed that the Philippines is known as a hotspot for this kind of crime. At the beginning of the interview — the word “interview” only now comes to my mind — I answered politely in full sentences. Now I go monosyllabic and end up answering “yes” or “no.” Then there are questions, why do I sleep with children in the hotel, whether I am a pedophile or belong to a syndicate of human traffickers? I think I’ve misheard, get angry and it becomes too stupid.

The guy does not give up, asks more penetrating and even more aggressive, in the style of an interrogation.

“Mik-Mik, do you have a Marlboro?” I try to avoid the verbal clutches.

The human rights activist or journalist — or whatever he is — writes and sweats. He repeats the questions about my sexual preferences and whether I am related to pornography, cyber crime and human trafficking.

“Stop! Enough, that’s enough for me! I’ve said enough!” I fend off the flood of new questions with defensive gestures.

The guy asks unmoved, suddenly pulls out his cell phone and cheekily tries to take a picture. I am faster and hold a newspaper in front of my face. Mik-Mik also immediately holds his hand in front of the cell phone.

At that moment Attorney De Baron, Franco, Marielou and Jonathan appear in the cell yard.

De Baron sees the journalist who is standing with his back to him, laughs loudly and shouts: “Dumampos, you old gunk, did you make it to my client?” The Attorney turns to me: “Mr. Heger, don’t answer any questions! Not from Dumampos, who works for these cheap local gazettes. Don’t get involved with other media people either.”

The journalist puts his notepad in his bag and looks like a kicked dog without saying another word.

“But, but,” I stutter, surprised and angry, “he said he was working for international human rights organizations?”

6.01. Convulsion

Excerpt:

….

In the middle of the night in the BSWD children’s home

Jan sleeps, but slowly he notices Dan’s whispering voice and the strange sounds in the room.

Dan gets in a panic, becomes louder and shakes his brother wildly: “Jan, Kuya (big brother) wake up!”

Sam, Aboy, Phil and the two brothers wake up too. It is late at night and the room has poor lighting. The boys are afraid of the strange noises that come from the corner with the beds of the three street boys. One of the metal beds groans and squeaks terribly. Despite the darkness, the children recognize that it must be Neko’s bed. Neko moves wildly on the mattress and his noise sounds like an animal. A continuing, pressed bright growling. Sam turns on the light. Dodung, the oldest of the three street boys, kneels in front of Neko’s bed. He tries to move away Neko’s twisted and stiff arms from his cramped body. Only the white can be seen from Neko’s eyes. His face is a grimace and saliva oozes from his mouth. Dan throws himself at his brother for protection and claws his fingernails in Jan’s back in fear. Now all the boys stare at Neko and Dodung. They have never experienced anything like this before. Dodung wipes the sweat from Neko’s face with a grubby t-shirt. At this moment Neko pees in his pants.

“He has a seizure. It goes over right away,” whispers Dodung. He sits down on the edge of the bed, attracts Neko on his lap, lovingly caresses the bald head and sobs: „Everything will be fine, Neko. Everything will be fine.” Suddenly tears run down Dodung’s cheeks. He caresses again Neko’s head and wipes with the t-shirt new sweat of Neko’s face and neck. Also Bernie, the third street boy, is now sitting on the edge of the bed and cries softly.

Sam roars the hallway: “Ma’am Burque!”

Jan massages Dodung’s shoulder: “You are a very good companion and friend.”

“I’m all he has,” sobs Dodung.

All boys are now, affected and confused, around the bed. Neko growls not anymore and the convulsion go away. He becomes clearer and looks confused to Dodung.

Ma’am Burque storms into the room. She only wears a thin white t-shirt and wide sweatpants.

6.00. Waterboarding

The in the Philippines arrested German, Thomas Heger, has some experience in the night.

Excerpt:

….

It is almost two o’clock, pitch black night and obviously cloudy as not even moonlight shines through the small window. The disco is over. I remember I fell asleep listening to the schmaltzy song from Foreigner I Want to Know What Love Is. What made me wake up? Voices can be heard. It seems some guys are in big trouble. There is the clapping of slaps and the dull noises of fist punches, followed by gasps and moans. A hissing conversation also. But I only understand the pleading words: “No, no, please, sir!”

The angry answers are muffled and in Visayan language.

Water splashes on the floor. Like a big stone is thrown into a barrel. At the same time a moaning, gasping and hectic breathing of at least two men. Water hits the ground again and the third man coughs and gasps in panic for air. He must have been submerged in a barrel or a tub.

One of the men whispers in a suppressed voice: “Historia, historia!” I translate that to: “Tell, tell!”

Somebody is forced to talk by waterboarding. The tortured man continues to cough and gasp for air. Another thud (probably in the stomach area) followed by a scream and moan.

“Historia!” hisses one of the torturers again. He does this in a subdued manner, certainly for fear of attracting attention and being discovered. Frozen with shock, I hardly dare to breathe.

“Enough!” says the second voice. The tortured man groans, pleads for something incomprehensible and continues gasping for air.

“Fuck!” the first voice screams madly.

Footsteps and grinding noises. Than the gate of the wire fence is open loudly. In the shadow of the matt spotlights from the wall of the police station I recognize three men, hear a cell door squeaking and a man is throwing it into the cell. Nasty laughter in front of the cells. Now the noises of lighters and the smell of cigarettes. Then the pawing and rattling of the gate and finally the jingling bunch of keys again. I jump up and carefully peer through the cell door. The red glowing points of light from the cigarettes disappear at the corner of the building.

Shit, what was that? I’m in a panic and do a few laps in four square meters with excitement. I have no choice and lie down back on the bed, which is creaking terribly. In the other cells are muffled and anxious conversation. The tortured man seems to calm down. Now and then he still coughs and sobs softly.

The German Thomas Heger, arrested in the Philippines, call bis family in Germany by Skype.

Excerpt:

….
Sabine answers with a long “Aha!” Her face disappears behind the bottom of the huge coffee cup. We have to grin at it. Franco comments cheerfully: “Sabine drinks coffee.”

In the meantime, dad stands behind mom and has Mickey in his arms: “Mickey, look, there is Tommy in the computer. Yes, good dog.” Mickey howls and tries to lick dad’s chin. Michael and Franco laugh out loud at the scene in Germany. I have to smile. Ma’am Papillio looks interested and smiles too. Ma’am Tolisan works on the computer in the chamber and is probably amazed at the lively atmosphere in the office.

I get serious again quickly: “Sabine, Marie has access to my bank account. There is a German in Sendong City. You can transfer money through his Philippine account to me. First of all 5.000 Euro. I’ll take a look later into my email box and send Wolfgang’s data and mobile phone number. Wolfgang is okay. I’ve visited him several times in his big house. Frank is a failure. He doesn’t want to help. He is a very great friend!”

“Yes, very great friend!” Sabine and my parents repeat my last words on the same sarcastic way.

“No matter! Wolfgang helps. He’s okay!”

Sabine asks amazed: “Why do you need 5.000 Euro right away, Tommy?”

5.04. Teenager

Excerpt:

The German Thomas Heger, arrested in the Philippines, has two teenagers as visitors.
….
Marielou and Jonathan want to know how was the last few days here in the police station, when I can go home and whether my cell is okay. I tell about Michael’s heroic doings in the garbage. Michael is again embarrassed by the appreciative glances at him. “I hope to be free as soon as possible,” I answer. Then Marielou tells very emotionally and with wild gestures from the village. That all friends are shocked and would visit me, if they have only the money for the bus. Marielou and Jonathan report that the entire village would be on my side and believe in my innocence. Then they talk about Frank, the German, and their conversation on Frank’s balcony.

With a pressed voice, Marielou says: “Frank has reacted strangely.”

Jonathan says what he thinks: “Not like a real friend.”

I do not tell, that Frank does not want to help me in my worst situation, nor in the transfer of money. I’m very disappointed. I answer: “Frank is strange and indeed not clear.” I want to end the topic and set Wolfgang, the other German in Sendong City, on my imaginary to-do-list: Must ask Wolfgang for money transfer.

Now Marielou and Jonathan come to their dangerous adventure on their way to Attorney Paternesto. They were very close to a horrible motorcycle accident with Frank and had a terrible near death experience. The two teenagers tell their story in a very pictorial way with wild gestures and big eyes. Everyone laughs heartily. Except Rica, Jonathan’s and Sam’s mother. Horrified, she shakes her head at the story. The two officers are surprised by the good mood in the room and briefly look at us from their desk work.

“Thank you, that you even give me your life and die for me!” I comment on the narrative.
