I proudly present chapter

3.06. Marielou

Excerpt:

….
Marielou has had a wonderful weekend. She climbs out of the Motorela in a good mood, which has just turned its loop at the waiting seat in the village. A couple of little kids are trying to throw baskets on the worn basketball net and swirl up a lot of dust.

“Hello, Lou,” greet the dirty tots.

Some are her cousins. Marielou pulls her shoulder-length straight hair back, can’t help smiling at the sight of the dusty dwarfs, gives them a friendly greeting back and pauses briefly beside the sun-heated place. Apart from the little basketball players, the village is deserted and it is remarkably quiet.

Unsettling quiet, thinks Marielou in worry. Older women with laundry baskets hurry past whispering without paying any attention to her. There is a bad mood in the air. Marielou has antennas for this. Something is wrong today. It’s around twelve o’clock and the air shimmers in the midday heat. She spent the entire weekend at college events and stayed with her cousin of the same age in Sendong City. She didn’t have her cell phone with her. Perhaps someone has died or suddenly became seriously ill? She asks herself and looks around in disbelief.

She remembers some situations where the mood was similar to today: Neighborhood quarrel, quarrel between drunkards or a loud marital argument. After accidents or after a typhoon hit the village. Marielou guesses accident. Maybe something happened while fishing or a motorcycle accident? Asking the kids it will probably not lead to anything, she decides and hurries home.

The attractive 18-year-old Marielou is attending the first semester of Sendong City College. She is the younger of two daughters of the married couple Wilfredo and Janeth. This family also belongs to the Taslig clan. Wilfredo is the younger brother of Romolo Taslig, Aboy’s father, and Marie-Ann, who is Vicente’s mother. Vicente is Phil’s mother.

Marielou reaches, breathless from a fast walk through the labyrinth of houses and huts, the strip of land in front of the black sand beach. Here are the fishers‘ simple huts located, under tall coconut trees. Her parents‘ small fishing boat is jacked up on two wooden frames. Her father repairs the wooden hull. It smells like epoxy resin and oil paint. Mother Janeth sits in the sand with her legs apart and mends the fishing net with nylon thread and a large wooden needle.

“Mom, Dad!” Marielou bursts into the situation, “has something bad happened?”

Janeth immediately jumps up and hugs Marielou fiercely: “You don’t know it yet, Lou? Something happened to Tommy!”

“No, what?” Marielou interrupts her mother impatiently. They are facing each other.

Wilfredo looks up and puts his tools aside and shakes his head: “Tommy was arrested in Tugalm City. There was a report on the news this morning. Didn’t you see that?”

Journey into Disaster

I proudly present chapter

3.05. The devil „Dengue

Excerpt:

A sad chapter about Dengue.
….
Stunned, Rica slowly realizes what happened to her: The youth home won’t let me see Sam! She presses the doorbell several times, but the doorbell remains silent. “Switched off! They won’t let me see my son.” This hits her like a hammer. She howls loudly and remembers the thoughts she just had before: The anticipation of the big, happy children’s eyes at the sight of the delicacies.

“No!” she exclaims in despair and violently shakes the gate. “I do not accept that I cannot see my son. I will not lose another child!”

Some visitors, possibly employees on the way to the other buildings, stop for a moment and shake their heads at the woman at the gate who is crying loudly and hysterically.

Memories and emotions are awakened that she long suppressed: Her sweet daughter, her baby, her little princess. She remembers and sees the small body lying on the treatment table, the small back of the hand, much too tiny for the infusion needles. Rica remembers that much blood. Blood that comes from all orifices. In her mind’s eye, she again sees the hectic doctors and the overwhelmed nurses. And the annoyed doctor who referred her from the treatment room when she had a crying fit. To this day, she cannot remember the tranquilizer she received, but of that sudden, monotonous sound. There was no “beep, beep, beep” anymore. Than this unbearable silence and the doctors and nurses with drooping shoulders and bowed eyes.

“The devil Dengue fetched another child.” This phrase was said very often during the epidemic.

Her cute princess, just three years old. Rica remembers the sweet laugh, but she will never hear it again. Never again! Then, there were these ambiguous statements of the hospital employees: “Why she did not come earlier to the hospital? Do not wait in case of Dengue-fever. You did not use a mosquito-net or a spray, Lion Tiger or a protective skin-cream against mosquitoes? You did not remove all the puddles and other open water around the house?” She and her husband Ernesto felt guilty of the death of her little daughter. They never talked about it. It took a long time to process this pain, to repress what was happening and the feeling of guilt. Then came Samuel. Sam has a very similar character to her little princess. He is always interested in everything, open-minded and always laughs. He never has anything bad in his mind. A good kid.

Journey into Disaster

I proudly present chapter

3.04. Marlboro

Excerpt:

How it works in the Philippines.
….
There are about 20 minutes with the Motorela, the motorcycle taxi, from the police station to the BSWD. When Michael is getting out of the Motorela, he notices the white concrete stone, which carries the red-blue emblem of the BSWD. The narrow sides of the concrete block follow the contours of the emblem: two vertical hands that are folded in the shape of a heart and enclose a group of people. Michael wonders about the oblique position of the block. There are prints of coarse soles on one of the narrow sides.

“Somebody was really mad,” Michael laughs to the driver. He grins broadly as answer and has a glowing cigarette butt in the corner of his lips. With a screeching engine, the Motorela turns on the spot and rushes away with a blue exhaust plume.

Michael goes to the right. There he sees the square with the tattered basketball net, the rusty play equipment, the swing and the unsightly children’s home. The multi-storey functional building is surrounded by a high chain link fence. On top of the fence has barbed wire rolled up in an endless spiral. Michael shakes the closed gate hard so that it and the heavy chains rattle and clink loudly. On the right side there is a small, weatherproof box with the bell inside. After ringing the bell three times, a fat security guard in a poorly fitting uniform arrives. His pants hang and the shirt peeks out. It seems funny to Michael, and he grins.

“What are you ringing the bell here crazy? What do you want?” the guard asks.

He shows the bags with the Tupperware, drinks and sweets: “For the children from Sendong City. I’m Phil’s father, um Philipp Kabaltos. We cooked and went shopping. Also toothbrushes and toothpaste, little towels and whatever children just need.”

“No visits! Instruction and order of at the top, mister! From the highest!”

Michael is unimpressed. He lights a Marlboro and immediately blows the blue smoke sharply into the air: “Sir, I don’t want to visit them for long, just bring the food over quickly and ideally take the Tupperware back with me. They’re only borrowed.” While Michael talks, he holds the Marlboro box under the sweating guard’s face.

His eyes light up: “The Lord has sent you! I wonder, my cigarettes are empty. Very funny, it seems a few smoked himself. Usually, one pack is enough for one night shift. Thanks! And you’re one of the fathers of the five brats, uh boys? Are you from Sendong City? It’s none of my business, but why were the boys out with the foreigner?”

Michael remains friendly, inside he is boiling. He knows this scruffy guy is the most important man in the whole damn BSWD right now. He must pass him. That’s why Michael replies calmly: “The foreigner is our friend. Eight years ago he took the photos at my wedding. He’s okay. We know him very well.”

“Oh!” says the guard and blows out the smoke. His jacket is at least three sizes too big.

Michael holds the box under his nose again: “Take it if you don’t have any more!”

He pulls four Marlboro: “Good, wait. I’ll see what I can do for you. But I can’t give any promises.” Then he shuffles away towards the building and arranges his pants and shirt and straightens everything.

Five minutes later the guard laboriously opens the gate. In the meantime he babbles: “I gave a good word for you. Sir Sala, my boss, allowed 20 minutes. But only, because you are a father and not the stupid media. And, yes, because you are a nice guy. But not talking about the case, I mean do not talk about the foreigner. Otherwise, the visit is immediately over! Okay?”

“Crystal clear, sir!” replies Michael curtly, and is thinking: Just don’t talk too much. Better shut up. I’ve achieved my target.

3.03. The major

Excerpt:

The major of the police station visits Thomas Heger at the cell.
….
I get down back on the bed. Not a minute goes by when the gate of the wire fence creaks pathetically. I jump up exactly at the right moment. I am standing at the lattice door. Idi Amin stands in the middle of his two subordinates. Dark, almost black skin, bloated face, huge peaked cap with a red ribbon, but the major does not measure more than 1.65 meters.

He speaks broken English. His voice is deep and stern: “Name?”

I salute and stand erect like a soldier, although I’m thinking that strikes me as silly. “Thomas Heger!” I answer.

The officer on his right repeats: “Thomas Heger, sir.”

I repeat breathlessly: “Thomas Heger, sir!”

“Nationality?”

“German, sir.”

“Why are you here?”

I’m talking like a machine-gun: “Sir, we just wanted to stay one night only in the hotel, and immediately back to our hometown the next morning. I had the permission of the parents. We want to buy school supplies…”

The major seems to be annoyed: “Answer only my question.”

I’m confused and have no answer.

The officer on the right opens a thin white folder made of cardboard and reads in military style and much too loud: “Republic Act 7610, child abuse, sir! Boys, Sir!”

He closes the folder. All three policemen nod with disgusted expressions on their faces. The corners of the mouth pull down, their eyes are narrowed. Without saying any word, the officers and the major turn left as if on orders and have already disappeared to the next cell.

Confused, I sit on the bed. Unknown female and male officers stare at me. I suddenly feel extremely uncomfortable. They whisper about me in front of the cell. I clearly hear keywords: “German national, hotel, five little Filipino boys, semi-nude, rescued, TV, BSWD, child abuse, 7610”

Policewomen open their mouths at the information, gawk at me in horror or in disbelief.

It’s like in the zoo. I’m in the cage and outside the spectators and visitors. The attraction is a white child-eating monster.

My annoyance turns into aggression and immediately into anger. They’re making me to a perpetrator, a monster. it screams inside me: I have to do something, finally defend myself!

I whisper desperately: “But how? I’m in the dungeon.”

3.02. Dodung’s bad day

Excerpt:

What happens to the leader of the three street-boys?
….
Sir Sala has just disappeared into the building with a satisfied face when the black SUV from the TV station stops with screeching tires in a cloud of dust. The reporter, the camera operator and the sound man jump out of the car immediately.

Dodung is already at the fence: “Ma’am, you promised me yesterday an interview, please, ma’am. I know so many exciting stories from the street!” Dodung spits in his hands and straightens the non-existent hair, because his head is short sheared. He poses jaggedly and pleads desperately: “Please, ma’am, please, you promised!”

The cameraman snaps at him: “Just piss off! We didn’t come here for you, street dog. Take a look at yourself. You’re such a ugly, stupid glue-sniffer without any future. Your brain is already completely destroyed by rugby-glue. You are really disgusting garbage.”

Suzette Zambrano, the reporter, takes no notice of the cameraman or Dodung and his two friends, the three spindly, pathetic figures. She is busy with lipstick, face powder and hand mirror.

The man for the sound puts on the headphones: “Didn’t you hear it, you little stinking rat, piss off!” He shakes the gate: “Shit, locked!”

Dodung is boiling like a volcano. Suddenly tears run down his face. He explodes and yells hysterically with a cracking voice: “You shit motherfuckers, fuck you! Son of a bitch. You pigs, monkeys!” He kicks the gate in rage and shakes it vigorously. The gate, chains and padlocks rattles noisy. Dodung and his two fellow sufferers howl loudly and accusingly and cover the three media people with all swear words they know. And they know a lot of swear words, the seven boys in the background notice in amazement.

Sir Sala grabs Dodung by the neck, Ma’am Burque grabs Bernie’s arm and the fat security guard lifts up little Necko. The three bitterly howling children are rudely pushed into the house. Sir Sala yells annoyed to the media: “Get out here! Order from the police! No interviews.” He gasps at the security guard: “Protect the gate, no media. Nobody talks to the boys!”

Meanwhile, Ma’am Solano is rowing her arms helplessly in the door of the building. Her forehead is sweaty, her face is frightened and her breathing is frighteningly fast.

3.01. Hypocritical

Excerpt:

The villagers slept in the church of freetime-pastor Jack.
….
Vicente, Michael’s wife, also disagrees: “Attorney Padernesto did a very good job. When I was a child a policeman has shot my father. He got a life sentence. Why should we trust Tommy to an unknown attorney? I ask you?”

Jack replies sullenly, there is also anger in his voice: “De Baron is very well-known here and very successful. It is important that an attorney knows everyone in town!”

Lang looks embarrassed into the coffee cup: “We have to stay positive. Maybe Tommy doesn’t need an attorney after all. You heard what the children said. They said nothing!”

Matthew, Lang’s spouse, repeats: “Nothing!”

Jack, the wooden doll face, laughs: “Ha, you didn’t see the TV news? What do you think, what’s going on now?” He points to the open door, talking in rage and speaks his words louder: “The city has no other topic anymore. A German with five cute young boys in a hotel! How stupid is that?

Jack’s visitors are startled and look in disgust away.

But Jack is not finished yet and is now really in a rage: “The mayor of Tugalm City, the police, the media, the groups against violence against children, the foreign organizations, the BSWD — and who know who else? — they are just forming. Tommy doesn’t need an attorney? That’s right, he doesn’t need only one attorney, the German needs several! He needs a whole army of attorneys!”

The villagers are speechless. They haven’t looked at the subject from the side yet.

Lang replied defiantly: “The children testify that there was nothing!”

The parents, Kagawad, Franco and the teenagers nod vigorously.

Romolo was all the time silent. He clears his throat: “Lang is right. The boys said nothing bad had happened. And the shower in the hotel? I beg you! That is never enough for an indictment. And if we’re on Tommy’s side, nothing will happen. Nothing at all!”

3.00. Second day in jail — Pray

Excerpt:

First of 3. chapter (Monday)
….
After the toilet and a soothing shower in the police station, I am now back in the usual circle with the Officers Sarang and Pangutana. We drink instant coffee. Sarang’s son is already torturing dad’s laptop with “Counter Strike.” The police student, I gave him money for baked goods 15 minutes ago, has just returned and brings pandesal rolls and sweets. I leave him the change.

Officer Sarang’s son, takes a second bun. “What about his mother?”

„Um, yes,“ Officer Sarang is surprised at the question and I regret asking it. The officer immediately smiled mildly and replied: “She’s gone. From one day to another, just gone. Maybe it’s the working hours. I’m almost never at home and when I do, I’m too exhausted for anything.” Officer Sarang stirs the coffee with an absent look: „Maybe we were just too young. First love and so on.“

I’m not quite sure how to answer Officer Sarang’s remarks. To end the seconds of silence, I reply: “You did it well,” and point the sugar-roll at John.

“John is fine, he’s a nice kid. Sometimes a little too calm.” There is pride in Sarang’s voice. John seems ashamed of the conversation about him. He rolls his eyes.

“No dance class today?” I ask him.

John’s father replies: “I don’t know if John’s English is enough, but he has no school today. Are you still on vacation? Mr. Heger, how about you? Only a life partner? Not married? No children?”

“Getting married is such a thing. Many in Germany live in a marriage-like community, without a wedding ring. I have a son. For a long time I didn’t know that he even existed. The result of a very, very short relationship. His mother died early. When he was 14, he found me. His grandma had documents with my name on it. He looks like me. Undoubtedly my son.” I’m laughing: “Even without a DNA test.”

Also Sarang and Pangutana are laughing.

I change the conversation to my topics: “It’s very important to call my family in Germany this afternoon. My family will inform the Embassy of the Philippines in Germany and the German Embassy in Manila today.”

2.39. Breakdown

Excerpt:

Heger alone in the dungeon (Last chapter of second chapter.)
….
I sleep and wake up. The skinny candle flickers nervously, in a barely noticeable breeze. The disgusting stench of the dump mixes with the smell of the smoldering and incense-scented Lion-Tiger. The mosquito killer does not improve the air in the cell either. Cold moonlight shines through the narrow window. The light from the halogen spotlights shines through the lattice door. The cell ceiling and the walls can hardly be seen, it is very dark. As a reflex I beat my ear, because suddenly a mosquito hums there as if it were flying straight into my ear canal. Now I am finally awake, although I should be sleeping but sit on the edge of the bed. My watch’s LED illuminates 10:04 p.m.

“Already 24 hours arrested.” I’m frustrated. It echoes in my brain: 24 hours! “Damn it, I’ve been detained for 24 hours! Just why? Because of a day and a very short night in the hotel? What happened? What’s the point? Is this a joke? Am I in the wrong film, on the wrong train and track?” I’m talking in the dark.

A lot is going through my brain. My dear family, friends and colleagues in Germany. The families and friends from the village. And of course, the five boys who are now in the youth home: The sturdy, practical Sam, the thoughtful and intelligent Jan, who always has an eye on his cute and shy brother Dan. Then the always funny and cheeky Aboy and his good-natured and adventurous cousin Phil. Remembering the constant and natural happiness of the boys and how happy they were about our trip makes me happy and sad at the same time. There are still fires in their young clear eyes, and they have that certain sparkle.

There’s this saying:

The entire universe can be found in every child.

My eyes get wet, I sob, howl softly at once and lie on the filthy bed. The small terry towel covers my face and is already soaked with tears. Nature takes its toll. I fall into a dreamless sleep.

Excerpt:

Heger calls his family in Germany.
….
“How should we not worry? How, Tommy?” Mother asks indignantly.

Sabine adds: “Tommy, you were arrested in the Philippines. Everyone knows, neither law nor order is there. We don’t hear anything good about this country, Tommy, you know that.”

“But I’ve never had any problems here. Except at night you shouldn’t be in the streets. That’s why we slept in the hotel.“

Marie sobs. I can literally imagine her shaking her head and the red spots appearing on her pale face. They always come when Marie is excited or upset. Surely she’s wearing the patterned purple scarf that she loves so much. It’s winter in Germany. She says bitterly: “I always warned you to go there, Tommy.”

“You were always with your self-help groups. Men are not allowed there. You don’t like long-distance travel either, Marie. So why should I go to waste my holiday in Germany? Here I can go on vacation, I can relax and do something good with a small amount of money.”

Marie wants to answer, but Sabine stops her: “Marie, Tommy, that won’t do any good. We have to see how we can get you out of there.”

“Sorry, Marie,” I say contrite.

“It’s okay, Tommy,” sobs Marie.

Sabine goes on: “While you were getting together so nicely, I found the addresses of the German Embassy in Manila and the Philippine Embassy here in our city on Dad’s computer on the Internet. Nobody will be there today, because Sunday. Mother can, however, tomorrow morning visit the embassy of the Philippines. It’s close by. Tommy, is there a warrant of arrest?”

“Warrant of arrest? I don’t know? I didn’t ask about it. Sorry again. I’m totally exhausted. I hardly slept last night. So many things happened in a row today.

Novel

Journey into Disaster

I proudly present chapter

2.37. (Im)patience

Excerpt:

….
I have no patience and stand for half an hour with the forehead at the rusty lattice bars of the cell door. Nothing, really absolutely nothing happens. I have the worst thoughts about the VISA card. Franco and Kagawad take all from my account and I will never see Franco, Kagawad and the VISA card again. I am shocked by my stupid thoughts and ask myself: “Why am I so distrustful?”

Mangy dogs argue over leftovers in front of the cells. Although a light breeze blows greasy paper and garbage across the cell yard, it is violently hot. The stench in my cell is incredible.

“Damn it, I have to call Sabine and the family. Please let me call!” I whisper, but I would rather scream it out into the world. Shouting to let out some frustration.

Minute after minute I get more nervous, walk in circles on the three square meters in the cell, stand at the door and walk in circles again.

The parents, their children and the two teenagers have not yet left the police building.

Finally, something happens at the barrier. Kagawad and Franco discuss with the gatekeeper, wave large plastic bags and point to me. I let out my breath with relief.

I proudly present chapter

2.36. Obtrusiveness

Excerpt:

Bad experiences in front of the cell building.
….
It’s around 3:30 p.m. The yard in front of the cell building is well filled with visitors and inmates. There is a constant coming and going.

One of the visitors recognized Jacub Castro from the vegetable wholesale market. Then word got around quickly that Jacub Castro is a Kagawad — meaning a local mayor. This fact probably protected me from the intrusive Filipinos and their questions.

A Kagawad is a person of respect.

Now, after Kagawad and Franco have left, ta
