“How long ago was that?” I ask myself quietly, “nine or ten years?”
At that time Adon called me in Germany. His son Franco has second time dengue fever. The child is already bleeding from all orifices, also bleeding internally. He has no money for the blood transfusion. Without infusions, the child’s chances of survival would be zero. We both cried on the phone. It was then around 400 Euro that saved Franco’s life. When I traveled back to the village, Adon asked me if I would like to support Franco on his school education. For me a small amount of money, for the child it is the opportunity for a better future.
I sit on the edge of the bed and run through my sweaty hair. There were these doubts back then. To help or not to help?
“Damn it,” I say quietly, “did I have a choice? If the child had died of dengue fever, would I have still been able to look in the mirror? Could I have travel back to the village and look my best friend in his eyes? And then helping is a good thing. Franco is studying today. It’s a success story. Sure, I could have travel to other Southeast Asian countries, maybe Thailand, Indonesia or Vietnam. But it was too late, I already took the village people in my heart.
These are the downsides of the country. For me it’s a perfect vacation paradise, but for most of the population it’s nothing more than a brutal struggle for survival.
