7.01. The story from Sendong City

Kagawad (Mayor) from the village tells Tommy a story about a little boy and Tommy also tells a story.

Excerpt:

….

Tommy: “It is funny that the children mention this story from Sendong City in the interview.” I think out loud, shake my head and get more precise: “I mean the story when they surprisingly knocked on my door a few days ago. They were totally soaked and dirty.”

Kagawad: “Which boys visited you?”

“It was Sam, Jan, Phil, Aboy and Morris.”

“Oh, that five,” replies Kagawad. “With the exception of Morris, everyone is now in the BSWD children’s home. Lucky for Morris that he didn’t travel with you.”

“Five children is the upper limit. I wouldn’t travel with more.”

“Morris lives with Tabita. She is his foster-mother. She probably can’t give birth to babies of her own. Morris’s mother is somewhere in Manila. The father is also not interested.”

“Yes, Tabita. I didn’t meet her in the village, so I couldn’t ask if Morris could travel with me. When I visited the Barcellas, Dan looked at me with such sad eyes that I took him. At first I just wanted only Jan as a companion. Dan’s big brother. They are the sons of Lang and Matthew, you know.”

“Tabita is out and about in Sendong City all day trying to sell fish. Sometimes she is away from home for six or seven hours just to earn about 150 Piso.”

“150 Piso? These are not three Euro!” I throw in incredulously and shake my head at it.

“Morris is always roaming around. Mostly in the village. He eats with uncles, aunts or neighbors, goes swimming all day and often lacks school. Nobody cares really about the little guy.”

“Maybe his missing daddy is the reason I couldn’t get rid of the little boy while I was living in Frank’s house last year. I gave Morris a shirt because he kept walking around with the same holey dirty part. I never saw him with slippers. He got a pair of blue Islander flip-flops. Kagawad, he was very happy! After that he would always crouch in front of the house and never take his eyes off me. Then I sometimes invited him for dinner. One more of them is not noticeable. I think he was always hungry. My God, how skinny and small he is for his age. I also gave him 20 Piso from time to time.”

Kagawad lights the next one. I’m taking a break.

He comes back to the report: “And what did the boys say in their interview? Something about fun?”

Journey into Disaster

I proudly present chapter

7.00. New day, new misfortune!

Some villagers visit Tommy who has been arrested in the Philippines and report on an NGO which visited the village to talk to the parents.

Excerpt:

….
Vicente is worried: “Tommy, what about you? When will they set you free?”

Romolo seems more relaxed than last time: “Yes, Tommy, when do they dismiss that story and release you?”

Shyly I look at the officers sitting at their desks: “The police say nothing to the case. The public prosecutor has to see the file first. Only he has the power to decide how it continues. Today is Friday. A week ago, Sam and Phil asked to visit Tugalm City. What a stupid story! If we had returned the same day, and I would have given the children on this day back to you — Everyone would be happy now.”

Kagawad Jacub Castro turns to me: “Blaming yourself doesn’t help. Together we have to work on it, and we have to find out how to finish your story as soon as possible.”

I like that he says “we.” It calms me.

Romolo reaffirms the Kagawad: “With God’s help, we already do that. Tommy, I have better, stronger medicine, my pain in my knee and fingers are gone.” For demonstration, he moves the fingers like a piano player.

I congratulate the sympathetic Romolo for his painless existence.

Silas has eaten the sugar roll and swallowed it down with the last swig from its water bottle: “Tommy, last night visited us a strange foreigner in the village. He wanted to talk with the parents. Ernesto just went out for fishing. Matthew wasn’t back from work.”

Romolo exclaims excitedly: “The guy talked about helping our families. He was from a Christian organization, an aid association and had heard that a foreigner was supposed to have molested our children. Then he saw and examined my broken fishing boat and asked what the repair would cost. I honestly replied that it is beyond repair. So he said straight out, we should file a criminal case against you. Then he could help us. Help with a new boat and fishing net. The association he works for is in the Philippines for precisely this kind of help. I told him to leave as soon as possible.”

Romolo’s son Silas reports with sweeping gestures: “They were suddenly in a hurry. He looked at his fat wristwatch, what a showy thing! Then he climbed back into the big, air-conditioned SUV, said he would be back and roared away. What a horny sound from the thick exhaust tubes. The machine is definitely inflated on double power. Tommy, well that was an SUV! A real gangster cart! You do not believe that, Tommy! Huge, wide tires in size as for 48-tonner and this on chromed rims. The SUV — it can’t be different — black, with tinted windows and an extra driver! That was clearly the bodyguard from the foreigner. I bet he has a huge gun under the seat!”

Like all others, Vicente also listens to the funny, imaginative narrative. Then it is enough narrative and she interrupts the teenagers: “Good, that this man didn’t find our house!” Now she is very upset: “With such people we do not want to talk! We are your friends, Tommy!”

6.10. Skype for big money

Thomas Heger, arrested in the Philippines, calls his family in Germany via Skype.

Excerpt:

….
Sabine and my mom have frightened faces. Marie looks incredulous, swallows and groans: “With the amount that we are supposed to transfer, that’s 6.400 Euro! Tommy, the money burning must stop immediately!”

„Yes, Marie, after the parents‘ affidavits are okay, they and my friends can go back to the village! The youth home also care off the children and surly cooking food. Certainly not so princely and delicious as we.”

Helplessness dominates the moment and in Germany is a depressing peace in the room. Nobody has ideas, solutions, answers.

It bursts out of me: “Marie, please terminate the deposit account! There are about 15.000 Euro, with a three-month notice period. But send only the 4.000 Euro to Wolfgang. Attorney de Baron shall get his 120K Piso. Then the man can start working. No, send 5.000 Euro. I also need something.”

Marie replies lost in thought: “Attorney De Baron — funny name.”

“Tommy!” shouts my mom, suddenly dismayed. “How long do you want to stay there? When will they finally release you? When the children, parents and friends speak for you, what’s the problem?”

“This country keeps a different time with their clocks, mom. In Germany they have no time, but money. Here in the Philippines they always have a lot of time, but nobody has money!”

“Tommy, we don’t have a lot of money either!” Mom replies excitedly. Marie and Sabine repeat our mom’s answer. Mickey excitedly barks between. Dad calls out indignantly to drown everyone: “Tommy, they just want your money. They are cheating and gutting you!” The dog gets dad’s anger: “Mickey — damn again — now finally shut up, we’re doing Skype!”

Marie hooks up there and says quickly: “Tommy, please be careful with the money and don’t waste it. What your dad says about gutting and the way you talked about it, it seems like this!”

“Should I save money now? Now, where it is about my life?” I’m desperate and too loud.

Officer Sarang suddenly stands next to me and asks in English: “Do you have problems, sir?”

“No, no, sir! We only discuss important things!”

Officer Sarang looks interested in the laptop screen. I explain the persons — facilitated and grateful — to end the discussion about money: “My sister Sabine, my partner Marie and my mom. My dad is not in the picture.”

But at that very moment he appears with Mickey in his arms and has apparently already calmed down: “Mickey, look, there is Tommy in the computer.”

Mickey yowls and tries to break free. We wave at the computer camera.

The three women wave to the smart officer. He says only: “Very handsome family, especially your sister!”

Sabine smiles and translates into German for my parents.

I further explain in English: “This is Police Officer Sir Sarang. A really nice guy!”

Mom complains: “Speak German, I don’t understand anything!” She immediately adds: “The policeman looks really nice!”

6.09. Ma’am Solano’s phone calls

What’s up in the Philippines? The social worker Ma’am Solano is on the phone with a TV man and an NGO. Money makes the world goes round.

Entire chapter exclusive for my lovely readers!

….
Ma’am Solano is finally back from this stressful trip to the Health Center. Excursions like this she does not like. Alone in the office, she is sitting at the desk and plugging the cell phone on the charger. As soon as the battery has recovered somewhat, she will first call Sir Steiner from the TV station. The interview was short, but she kept her promise to make it happen. She stares spellbound at the battery indicator and thinks: No, I hate trips like this today. Especially with street boys, those glue-sniffing kids. They are capable of anything and like to use such trips to run away. It’s good that the officer was there. They don’t dare to escape. We bring the ungrateful brats off the streets and then we just only have stress with them. It is time for my boss, Sir Sala, to find a place for the three figures in a closed facility. The best thing to do is far away from here. Maybe somewhere in the mountains. So that normal conditions can finally reign in our children’s home. The city no longer has to worry about begging rugby boys. But they keep growing, they are like weeds!

Finally, the seconds have passed, and she can switch on her phone, and immediately dials Steiner’s number. There is a crack in the loudspeaker and she talks without Steiner being able to say a word: “Oh, Sir Steiner, this is Ma’am Solano from the BSWD. Are you satisfied with the new interview?”

Steiner obviously takes a pull on a cigarette and blows out: “The interview was a little short, but it is okay. Under these circumstances we have to be happy to get the boys in front of the camera at all. We will cut the interview behind the report at the press conference.” Steiner suddenly laughs out loud: “Well, this NGO created a pretty good atmosphere there and once again embarrassed the police!”

She is not sure which information to go into first and states: “But you are again exclusive with the child-interview and the police responded professionally.”

Steiner does not go into the NGO: “Oh, Ma’am Solano, you are developing into a media professional, but where you are right, you are right!”

Ma’am is unsure whether there is sarcasm in Steiner’s voice: “But you are exclusive again with the interview!”

“Yes, ma’am, exclusively, thanks to you! When do you visit me? It’s already quite late today. I have a better idea. I’ll leave an envelope for you at the reception counter. You can pick it up at any time. I don’t think we have anything else to discuss, and you can certainly imagine that we are suffocating at work.”

Ma’am is facilitated. She loves Sir Steiner, because of its ability to read her thoughts: “Thank you, sir, then I do not want to steal your precious time anymore. If we have a similar story, I’ll call you immediately. Ah, Sir Steiner, we still have two brothers from a family tragedy in the same age as the five out of the village. Mother beaten by her husband. He is now in prison, the mother still in the hospital. Interest, sir?”

Steiner blows out the cigarette smoke: “No, thank you! This is too commonplace and not a real sensation. We currently have the German case. There is still a lot to be gained before our audiences lose interest.”

“Okay, Sir Steiner! Then I say thank you very much and see you next time.”

Without any further reaction from Steiner, the conversation is over.

-★-

Ma’am Solano looks at the display: “I heard correctly, there was a call. An unknown number.”

Her phone rings: “Ma’am Solano? Do I call Ma’am Solano from BSWD? My name is Mc Bride from the private organization Prowoch. We greeted each other briefly at the press conference today. Unfortunately, you then disappeared very quickly. Ma’am Tolisan, the policewoman, was so nice and gave me your number. I think that’s okay?”

She stutters: “Yes, well, Mr. Bride, what can I do for you?”

“Ma’am Solano, you certainly know that our organization provides an aid package for abused children and their families.” Mc Bride lowers his voice: “Of course, the program also includes donations to the youth home of the BSWD.”

“And for what is it?”

“Amounts without a certain purpose, ma’am. Clothing for children, funding for daily food, things for school and study, but also equipment for your youth home. For example, mattresses, or whatever you need!”

Ma’am Solano begins to sweat: “Yes, but how can we get the money, Sir Bride?”

“Mc Bride, Ma’am, my name is Mc Bride. We’ll talk about the when and how later. I’m on my way back to General de Santos. Halfway is Sendong City and I’ll visit the district where the boys come from. I want to look around there. But for that I need the name of the Barangay — the district. Otherwise, I’ll search for myself!” He laughs loudly at his last sentence, making it ring uncomfortably in ma’am’s ear.

Ma’am stammers: “Sendong City, Barangay Laog, very close by the sea.”

“Thank you, Ma’am, we’ll hear each other.” Immediately, the call is over.

Ma’am Solano looks at her phone in disbelief and says: “Well, that would be very nice!” She saves the new number under the shortcut “NGO” in the phone book.

6.08. Dentist and cell forecourt

The parents have a strange conversation with the social worker Ma’am Solano.

Excerpt:

….
Rica is unsure, turns the simple cell phone in her hand and quietly stutters: “Aboy’s father and Phil’s mother are coming tomorrow. I thought it would be good if we could visit our sons at the BSWD tomorrow Friday?”

Ma’am looks expressionless and answers: “But yes, Ma’am Restito, why not! The ladies of the police finished, as far as I heard, the interrogations of the children.” Confidential, Ma’am Solano brings her hand to the back of Rica’s hand. Rica is confused on this day again because she can not classify the sudden friendliness of her. With a malevolent ma’am looks at the three neglected street boys. They sit next to the officer, a bit off the villagers. She whispers: “Compared to these three, your children are pleasantly quiet, well-educated and easy to deal with. Come in a little earlier tomorrow and bring your food again. The kids love it!”

Rica has compassion with the three sad-looking street boys and smiles briefly at them.

Lang watches the scene and is amazed. Ma’am Solano’s friendliness makes her brave: “Ma’am, when can our boys get back to us?”

Again, Ma’am Solano continues thinking with this expressionless face. She sighs: “I cannot answer your question because that decides the prosecutor. We only do what was commanded to us.”

Michael listens to the conversation suspiciously and simultaneously admires Aboy’s milk teeth.

Ma’am Solano studies the three parents and says completely emotionless: “It would be better, you file a criminal case against your Tommy!”

Rica, Lang and Michael are a moment perplexed and shake their heads. Ma’am Solano turns back to her smart phone.

Rica whispers to Lang: “Why does she say that?”

Michael gets angry and is about to protest when Jan comes out of the treatment room beaming with joy. The pretty dental assistant is with him. She carries a few pieces of paper with her and says in a friendly manner: “Well, you have brave boys, would you please sign here and don’t worry, the treatment is free, our state pays for it.”

6.07. Chaos in the Health Center

It’s about 1:30 p.m. The five children from the village, the three glue snuffling street boys, their companions Ma’am Solano and Ma’am Burque and an escort officer in combat uniform are waiting for the doctors. Neko with the epileptic seizure last night has insisted that his friends Dodung and Bernie go with him to the psychologist.

But what then happens in the health center?

Excerpt:

….
The parking lot at the rear of the building is well occupied with parked vehicles and there is a lot of traffic. The sun has already passed its zenith and is burning mercilessly and almost vertically from the azure blue tropical sky. It’s scorching hot. The heavy Toyota pickup of the police, with the dozing driver in, is parked a little apart in an area reserved for employees or vehicles of other authorities. A large black SUV with dark-tinted windows is also parked there. Three people from the SUV are busy on the side facing away from the parking lot.

Ma’am Solano looks around searchingly in the glaring light and then goes with the boys to the SUV.

-★-

At the beginning of the interview, the reporters try to win the boys‘ trust and ease the mood. They greet like old friends, ask about accommodation at the BSWD and even about the rugby boys. They are friendly, courteous, crack jokes and laugh at them. The attractive Suzi offers the children her private nickname Suzi and compliments the beautiful appearance of the five astonished boys. Suzi is particularly impressed by the youngest, sweet Dan. She gives Dan a short hug. With the older ones, Sam and Jan, Suzi carefully tries to score with sex appeal. The three media people distribute junk food, cookies, fruit and cold Coke from an ice box. On the side, Suzi repeats questions that she has already asked the five during the first interview. The cameraman films Suzi and the boys who are standing in a close semicircle in front of Suzi. The third media man holds a large white sunshade over the group to keep the mercilessly burning rays of the sun off and to dampen the perpendicular light. He participates in the interview, so it now degenerates into a cross-examination. The children become embarrassed as Suzette asks questions about their privacy. She is persistent and her friendliness is decreasing: “So, you were naked in the hotel and in the shower room and Tommy, the German, took a lot of photos of you?”

The reporter, who is holding the parasol, adds: “Nude photos! And you had a nice day in the Gaisano, ate pizza, and splashed around in the swimming pool. Your Tommy promised you school supplies for naked pictures?”

6.06. All under one roof

The Filipino attorney really doesn’t have a good opinion of foreign NGOs ….

Excerpt:

….

The in the Philippines arrested German, Thomas Heger, asks: “Attorney, this foreigner, who is rushing away, was also at the press conference and how did the conference run? Did you ask Ma’am about the cell phone, sir?”

De Baron does not answer immediately, but enjoys the Lucky Strike. He clears his throat: “I had to wait because this foreigner was talking to superintendent Ma’am Papillio. He was with the policewomen faster than I can think and yes, he was also at the press conference. He is from such a strange organization. I already forgot the name. Mr. Heger, don’t worry about that guy! The NGOs are active all over the Philippines and are already stepping on each other’s feet. These do-gooders with their associations all want a piece of the pie. Funding, donations from abroad, subsidies, development aid. It’s just business too. They rarely ask us Filipinos, and those with the helper syndromes are often very annoying here. I have my experiences there. Sir Heger, believe me. Well, some are also use- and helpful. For example in the agricultural sector or to improve the infrastructure. These Christian associations naturally want to convert.” De Baron laughs loudly and ugly: “You cannot imagine how many Christian churches there are besides the Roman Catholic Church: Protestants, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, Born Again, Church of Christ, Couples of Christ, Servants of Christ. Then there are loads of Christian orders, fellow believers and so on. Everyone wants to earn money.”

I am annoyed, raise my hand, interrupt the attorney and repeat with a trembling voice: “Everything just business? Attorney, shouldn’t I be worried about this?”

“Mr. Heger, these NGOs are like the media, like vultures! Everyone wants to make money on criminal cases like yours and yes, Mr. Heger, don’t worry unnecessarily about this foreigner. It is very important what the children have said. The parents must remain your friends!” He glances at Mik, Rica and Lang one after the other and nods at them and says: stand by your German friend!”

I nod and am a little reassured. The attorney put it in a nutshell: “Sir, what about the cell phone?”

“That’s okay! Ma’am Papillio understands. We are all aware that in your defense you have to and will do everything that is possible and that you need a lot and also want to contact your loved ones in Germany.”

6.05. Nongovernmental Organization

The Philippine police investigators Ma’am Papillio and Ma’am Tolisan have a conversation with a foreign Christian NGO.

Excerpt:

….
“Sir, what can we actually do for you?” asks Ma’am Papillio curiously.

Mc Bride clears his throat: “Police Superintendent Ma’am Papillio, our Prowoch association and other NGOs have entered into an alliance with globally active NGOs that protect and save women and children from predators like this Heger — the German. We now have social and political contacts at the highest level and circles. That goes as far as the former American President and his presidential family.”

“And how do we fit into your story, sir?” asks Ma’am Papillio without any emotions. It’s all too grand and too far away for her.

“Financial support, Ma’am. We plan, especially in cases like this to support the entire Filipino judicial system. As you know, we give other sacrifices and the BSWD already supported by us.”

Ma’am Papillio interrupts the foreigner: “I know the latter. It is on your homepage.”

Mc Bride holds his hand in front of his mouth and whispers: “We support officially and unofficially in the Philippines. For example we already give some judges money so that they promulgate the correct judgments against foreigners. He winks at the policewomen and leans forward: “Ma’ams, you understand what I mean. But you and I have to be successful for that. I heard from a reporter that the parents are visiting this German. They are friendly to him. Ma’am, please help me get the parents on our side.”

Ma’am Tolisan’s eyes shine at the words “financial support.” Her boss, however, is thoughtful. After a few seconds Ma’am Papillio replies: “Sir, we are, of course, very happy about any kind of support. Nevertheless, I have to disappoint you, because it is against our statute on police work and neutrality in investigations. Therefore, we will not influence the parents or the alleged victims. However, feel free to travel to the village to talk to the families and the relatives of the children.”

6.04. Two mothers and a reporter

Two mothers want to visit the German arrested in the Philippines, but being interviewed by a penetrant reporter.

Excerpt:

….

Dumampos takes a short break and starts the sound recorder on his cell phone again: “So, there is the supporter and in return your boys can travel and sleep with this Tommy in the hotel?”

“No, sir,” Rica replies, “It was a pleasure trip. If the roads hadn’t been so bad and increased travel time so much, they would have returned the same day.”

“And Tommy would give the children back to us that evening,” Lang adds quickly and says irritably: “We have to go now, the food is getting cold. Come on, Rica!”

Dumampos persists: “As mothers, have you never had doubts about Heger? Were you not too careless, too gullible?”

The women shake their heads violently.

“Why do you think this Heger comes to our country and looks after your children? That’s strange, isn’t it?”

Rica and Lang don’t answer, feel pressured and just want to leave. But the reporter blocks their way through the first gate and becomes more and more piercing and louder. To make matters worse, he is now sweating profusely and has bad breath: “Is the Heger a gay man? Do you know the term ‚pedophile‘ ma’ams?”

Rica and Lang are now completely confused. They had never thought deeply about the meaning of this word. Sometimes heard on TV or on the radio news. It was never their subject. That was a few questions too many. What this guy wants is completely unclear.

Lang pushes Rica violently: “Come on, let’s go.”

Dumampos wants to ask the next question, but will be interrupted.

6.03. Press conference out of control

Attorney De Baron is at the police press conference and has his own view of things …….

Excerpt:

….
There are three activists from the Antitrafficking Board, recognizable by their uniform t-shirts, accompanied by a gray, curly-haired, gaunt and sporty-elegant-looking foreigner. He took out a notepad and pen. De Baron recognizes from the logo on the foreigner’s t-shirt that the guy is an employee of this non-governmental organization from Manila. Certainly a high-ranking official.

He remembers the forty-year-old: I only saw him recently in a report on CNN-Philippines! De Baron recalls contemptuously: After the business with pickled fruits from organic cultivation did not generate the profit, they had hoped for, they are now focusing their business model on saving people.

In his eyes they are practicing modern colonialism. As if the Philippines cannot solve their problems on their own. And don’t these self-proclaimed human rescuers have enough to do in their own countries? So are the NGOs already called on the scene? Bad for Heger, good for me. It will be difficult to defend the German. Public pressure on the public prosecutor is increasing every day. He doesn’t think anymore that the case will be dismissed on the prosecutor’s desk for lack of evidence. The foreigner dragged five Filipinos underage into the hotel. If a Filipino had done that, it would have been absolutely normal. Nobody would ask or call the police. But with a foreigner it’s a completely different matter. De Baron wipes the sweat from his forehead. It becomes hot because the four standing fans in the corners of the room do not do their job well. In addition, the lamps of the cameras. He keeps brooding: Isn’t that racism when, unlike Filipinos, the police are notified immediately? But that doesn’t matter now, because it is what it is: Heger sits in the trap. And no one is interested in dismissing the case quickly. For me that’s only advantageous, because each hearing must be paid in cash by the client. Not without reason, the item “Hearings and Court Days” is not in the offer to Heger! De Baron hides his satisfied grin behind an elegant handkerchief.

Ma’am Papillio taps the tabletop with her pen. De Baron is torn from his thoughts. The press conference starts half an hour late.

Novel

Journey into Disaster

Hello my dear visitors. Weekend is coming and I proudly present chapter

6.02. Crazy Morning

Thomas Heger, arrested in the Philippines, has his first painful experiences with the media.

Excerpt:

….
The reporter starts with his questions about myself, my marital status, why and how long I’m staying in the Philippines, whether I know the children and their parents better and why we were at the hotel.

I patiently answer the questions, and I quickly find myself confronted with the catchwords sex tourism, cyber crime, child pornography and human trafficking. He aggressively asks if I am informed that the Philippines is known as a hotspot for this kind of crime. At the beginning of the interview — the word “interview” only now comes to my mind — I answered politely in full sentences. Now I go monosyllabic and end up answering “yes” or “no.” Then there are questions, why do I sleep with children in the hotel, whether I am a pedophile or belong to a syndicate of human traffickers? I think I’ve misheard, get angry and it becomes too stupid.

The guy does not give up, asks more penetrating and even more aggressive, in the style of an interrogation.

“Mik-Mik, do you have a Marlboro?” I try to avoid the verbal clutches.

The human rights activist or journalist — or whatever he is — writes and sweats. He repeats the questions about my sexual preferences and whether I am related to pornography, cyber crime and human trafficking.

“Stop! Enough, that’s enough for me! I’ve said enough!” I fend off the flood of new questions with defensive gestures.

The guy asks unmoved, suddenly pulls out his cell phone and cheekily tries to take a picture. I am faster and hold a newspaper in front of my face. Mik-Mik also immediately holds his hand in front of the cell phone.

At that moment Attorney De Baron, Franco, Marielou and Jonathan appear in the cell yard.

De Baron sees the journalist who is standing with his back to him, laughs loudly and shouts: “Dumampos, you old gunk, did you make it to my client?” The Attorney turns to me: “Mr. Heger, don’t answer any questions! Not from Dumampos, who works for these cheap local gazettes. Don’t get involved with other media people either.”

The journalist puts his notepad in his bag and looks like a kicked dog without saying another word.

“But, but,” I stutter, surprised and angry, “he said he was working for international human rights organizations?”
